NORTH SUPPLY ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF ADA PAYPHONE GUIDE

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Nov. 30 ~PRNewswire~ -- North Supply, a Sprint company, has produced the "ADA Payphone Guide," a product reference to help businesses and other organizations meet the current requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
The law provides comprehensive civil rights protection to individuals with disabilities in the areas of employment, public accommodations, state and local government services and telecommunications.
Under the ADA's Title III, which addresses public accommodations, service establishments are required to be accessible to the disabled. When Title III is applied to public telephones, the act requires increased pay station access for those who are hard of hearing, wheelchair-bound and visually impaired.
The ADA Guide includes descriptions of payphones, payphone enclosures, TTs~TDDs (Text Telephones~Telecommunication Devices for the Deaf), amplification equipment, signs and other products available through North Supply which meet ADA requirements. More than a dozen manufacturers are represented in the publication.
"North Supply wants to make it easy for businesses to meet federal ADA guidelines," said Steve McMahon, executive vice president of operations at North Supply. "The ADA Payphone Guide provides an informative description of products that can help bring telecommunication services to all Americans in accordance with government specifications."
The ADA is a comprehensive law to protect the rights of more than 43 million individuals with disabilities.
According to the law, new construction intended for use or occupancy after Jan. 26, 1993, and alterations made to existing facilities after Jan. 26, 1992, must conform to the ADA public accommodations rules. Many of these rules apply to public telephones.
