NORTH STAR, MICHIGAN DNR REACH AGREEMENT ON PERMITS

MONROE, Mich., March 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Officials of North Star Steel Company announced today that the company has reached a settlement with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) on alleged permit violations at North Star's steel minimill here.
The consent agreement includes a $210,643 payment by North Star Steel to settle alleged permitting-process irregularities.
"In reaching this agreement, the company has demonstrated to the DNR that at no time did air emissions from North Star exceed National Ambient Air Quality Standards or state or federal permitted quantities for carbon monoxide, particulate matter or other criteria pollutants," said Ed Fox, North Star vice president and general manager of the Monroe minimill. This settlement enables the company to move forward in the permitting process for innovative use of production technology the company volunteered to install.
The new equipment to be installed pursuant to the settlement will provide the added benefit of reducing carbon-monoxide emissions from the steel minimill, according to Fox. He said the oxygen-lancing and oxy- fuel burner technology will increase the steel quality and quantity the mill can produce, while reducing carbon monoxide emissions.
