NORTH AMERICAN COLLECTION PROGRAM ANNOUNCED

WEST BEND, Wis., April 15 /PRNewswire/ - The Premiere Cookware Division of The West Bend Company announced today that it is implementing a voluntary collection program in the United States and Canada for electric liquid core casseroles manufactured during the period 1964 - 1971.
In announcing this initiative, the company noted that these appliances are close to thirty years old. Because of the products' advanced age, the company is concerned that some consumers may be inclined to dispose of the casserole along with their regular household trash.
These electrical appliances, sold in the United States under trade names including Lustre Craft, Lifetime, Queen Anne, Webalco, Kitchen Craft, Permanent, Inkor, Royal Queen, NutriSeal, Westminster, Renaware and Saladmaster, were manufactured with the use of polychlorinated biphenyls (`PCBs'). The PCBs were used as a heat transfer oil that is SEALED between two layers of stainless steel in the casserole units. This casserole was only manufactured in a round shape.
Premiere Cookware wants to ensure that the PCBs contained in these casseroles are properly collected and returned to the manufacturer. After consultation with the Environmental Protection Agency, Environment Canada and other government departments and agencies, a three-month collection program has been established by the company.
The company said that approximately 550,000 of these units were sold in the United States, solely through a network of door-to-door salespeople and in-home cooking demonstrations. The casserole has never been available through retail outlets.
Consumers can verify if they own a Premiere liquid core casserole manufactured during 1964-1971 by checking the three or four digit date stamp on the lower left hand quadrant on the underside of the casserole. If either the first two or last two digits are - 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70 or 71 - consumers are urged by Premiere Cookware to call 1-800-263- 7568 to arrange for collection of these appliances.
