 NORFOLK SOUTHERN NAMES GOODE CHAIRMAN AND CEO
 NORFOLK, Va., May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Norfolk Southern Corporation


(NYSE: NSC) today named David R. Goode to succeed Arnold B. McKinnon as chairman and chief executive officer, effective Sept. 1.
 Goode, who has served as president since October 1991, will continue in that position.
 The action was taken by Norfolk Southern's board of directors, meeting in Norfolk, and followed Goode's election to the board earlier in the day by the corporation's stockholders.
 McKinnon, 64, who will retire Aug. 31 after more than 40 years with Norfolk Southern and its predecessors, became chairman, president and chief executive officer in 1987. Prior to that, he had a long career in the law and finance departments, and served the newly formed Norfolk Southern Corporation from 1982 to 1986 as executive vice president-Marketing.
 Goode, 51, succeeded McKinnon as president last fall after serving as executive vice president-Administration. He previously had risen through the corporation's tax department, becoming vice president- Taxation in 1985. A native of Vinton, Va., he is a graduate of Duke University and the Harvard Law School.
