NORFOLK SOUTHERN ELECTS TURBYFILL VICE CHAIRMAN

NORFOLK, Va., May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE: NSC) today announced the election of John R. Turbyfill as vice chairman, effective June 1. He will succeed Joseph R. Neikirk, who retires at the end of this month after nearly 38 years of service with NS and predecessor companies.
Turbyfill, who has served since 1982 as Norfolk Southern's executive vice president-Finance, will be succeeded in that position by Henry C. Wolf, currently vice president-Taxation. Wolf will be succeeded by James A. Hixon, currently assistant vice president-Tax Counsel.
David R. Goode, chairman, president and chief executive officer, paid tribute to Neikirk's long years of service to Norfolk Southern and prior to that, Norfolk and Western Railway. "Joe Neikirk has served with distinction in all his capacities with the company, and we wish him well," said Goode.
Turbyfill is a Roanoke College and University of Virginia Law School graduate who joined Norfolk and Western in 1960 after several years with the New York law firm of Cravath, Swaine & Moore. He became vice president-Administration in 1972, vice president-Finance in 1975 and executive vice president-Finance in 1980. When NW and Southern Railway joined as Norfolk Southern in 1982, he was elected executive vice president-Finance of the new company.
Wolf, who succeeds Turbyfill as executive vice president-Finance, joined NW as a senior tax attorney in 1973, after serving with the United States Tax Court and the Internal Revenue Service. A graduate of the College of William and Mary and its law school, he was named assistant vice president-Tax Counsel for NS in 1984, and was elected vice president-Taxation in 1991.
Hixon, Wolf's successor as vice president-Taxation, joined the NS Tax department in 1985 after working for the law firm of Soutzos & Pierson. A Virginia Tech and William and Mary law school graduate, he became general tax attorney in 1986 and assistant vice president-Tax Counsel in 1991.
