NORFOLK, Va., Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE: NSC) today announced a voluntary retirement program for eligible non-union employees of Norfolk Southern and its railroad subsidiaries.
Thomas C. Sheller, executive vice president-Administration, said the early retirement program "will help Norfolk Southern realize organizational and staffing objectives that will enhance future opportunities." In a letter to all non-union employees, Sheller said, "The program should result in a smaller nonagreement work force, with staffing levels compatible with changing departmental requirements."
Just over 600, or 13 percent, of Norfolk Southern's non-union employees are eligible for the voluntary retirement program. All applications received from August 23 through September 17, 1993, will be accepted. Highlights of the program are:
--Participation by eligible employees who will be 55 or older in 1993.

--Supplemental benefits until eligible for Railroad Retirement or Social Security annuity.
--An immediate payment of a bonus equivalent, which will be included in the employee's pension calculation.
--Full pension credit for 1993 vacation pay along with payment for any unused 1993 vacation.
