Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, - The eighth annual A Season for Nonviolence Season for Nonviolence was established by Arun Gandhi as a yearly event celebrating the philosophies and lives of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. The "season" begins with the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's assassination and ends with the anniversary of Martin Luther King starts today, offering 64 ways to practice nonviolence over 64 days. The grass-roots campaign is dedicated to demonstrating that nonviolence is a powerful way to heal, transform and empower our lives and our communities. This international program honors their vision for an empowered and nonviolent world. To create an awareness of nonviolent principles and practice, the campaign centers on the 64 Ways in 64 Days to Practice Nonviolence. Every day a personal trait trait (trat) 1. any genetically determined characteristic; also, the condition prevailing in the heterozygous state of a recessive disorder, as the sickle cell trait. 2. a distinctive behavior pattern. , skill or action is highlighted, and a simple act to enforce the trait is suggested. For the first 23 days, the focus is on personal change and learning by building courage to speak and act with respect, honor and reverence. During the next 21 days, the focus is on interpersonal change in and learning to practice nonviolence in day-to-day interactions. The final 20 days focus on community, helping participants to stand for truth through action. Participation in A Season for Nonviolence is simple. People are asked to read the practices, talk about them with others and implement them as best they can. The task force recommends that families, co-workers and classrooms read the daily suggestions together and practice them. A Season for Nonviolence is aligned with the United Nations' resolution for an ``International Decade of Nonviolence for the Children of the World (2001-2010).'' The state of California has issued an official proclamation An act that formally declares to the general public that the government has acted in a particular way. A written or printed document issued by a superior government executive, such as the president or governor, which sets out such a declaration by the government. that the 64-day period between Jan. 30 and April 4 be celebrated as A Season for Nonviolence. The official SNV ceremonies at the United Nations are scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 15. Once again, SNV youth leaders will co-design and co-direct the program.
