It's the 11th time college football split its national championship since 1950.

``I'd love to play either one of those teams and match up against them,'' University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission  head coach Pete Carroll Peter C. Carroll (born September 15, 1951, in San Francisco, California) is the current head coach of the University of Southern California Trojans football team, having held that position since 2001.  said after the Sugar Bowl. ``I wouldn't mind that at all.''

A ceremony will be held at USC this morning to award the AP championship trophy to Carroll. USC won its ninth national championship but last won the title in 1978.

The championship presentation will be the culmination of USC's 12-1 season that concluded with a 28-14 victory over Michigan in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day New Year's Day, among ancient peoples the first day of the year frequently corresponded to the vernal or autumnal equinox, or to the summer or winter solstice. In the Middle Ages it was celebrated among Christians usually on Mar. 25. .

``I think it's quite clear we did everything we could do this season,'' Carroll said.

A second presentation for the general public, involving USC players, will be held later this month, once USC students return from Christmas break.

Some USC players watched the Sugar Bowl, but LSU's victory didn't sway their opinion over who should be No. 1. Others claimed they would purposely avoid the telecast, because they won the national title at the Rose Bowl.

USC defensive end Omar Nazel, who watched the game, said the split title hurt both teams and believed the Trojans should play the Tigers.

``USC and LSU got cheated out of the experience of playing in the championship game and got robbed of the idea that the two best teams play each other,'' Nazel said. ``All of college football got cheated a little bit.

``I feel LSU is one of the best teams in the country and so are we. I don't think Oklahoma should have been the No. 1 team in the BCS (1) (The British Computer Society, Swindon, Wiltshire, England, www.bcs.org) The chartered body for information technology professionals in the U.K., founded in 1957.  rankings. I don't think they came out to play.''

Nazel said it bothered him watching the Sugar Bowl telecast, but it didn't detract from detract from

``It hurt to watch the game,'' he said. ``But for the rest of my life, I can say I played for the No. 1 team in the nation. I was impressed with LSU but they didn't get the experience of playing USC.''

Also among the players who watched the game was All-American offensive tackle Jacob Rogers Jacob Rogers (born August 17, 1981 in Oxnard, California) is an American football offensive tackle in the NFL who is currently on the Denver Broncos roster. Early years
Rogers attended Oxnard High School, where he played tight end, defensive end, linebacker, and punter.
of Oxnard, who said watching the Sugar Bowl left him confident the Trojans were the best team.

``I still believe we're No. 1,'' Rogers said. ``It would be great to play them but we'll take our share of the national championship. I think we proved at the Rose Bowl we were No. 1 regardless of the outcome between Oklahoma and LSU.''

Although LSU received the BCS trophy, a crystal football synonymous with winning the title, Rogers said the AP trophy would be just as prestigious.

``We didn't get the BCS trophy but that's just the system and the way it's set up,'' Rogers said. ``We'll have our own trophy in Heritage Hall. It won't make any difference.''

The split title raised concerns about the validity of the BCS format. Big East Conference Commissioner Mike Tranghese, who is in charge of the BCS this year, said Sunday several changes are being considered for next season, including eliminating the controversial computer polls that kept the Trojans out of this year's championship game.

There is even a chance of adding an extra BCS game, Tranghese said.

He conceded the BCS ``made a mistake'' this season as a split-title scenario developed with USC winning the AP poll but not allowed to play in the Sugar Bowl because the BCS rankings placed the Trojans third behind Oklahoma and LSU, even though USC finished first in the human polls.

``We've got a system that somehow leaves the No. 1 team in both human polls out of the championship game,'' Tranghese said. ``We've got to do something.

``Computers don't calculate when you lose a game,'' Tranghese said. ``The polls are a reflection of your performance from week to week. We should have thought of that. We made a mistake, and we should be criticized.''
