 SONY CD GREETING CARD UNVEILED
POMPANO BEACH, Fla., April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Music Special

Products and Golden Circle Inc. recently unveiled a new entry into the $7 billion greeting card industry. In making the announcement, it was disclosed that Sony has reached an agreement with Golden Circle Corporation Fla., a successful manufacturer and distributor of promotional displays, vending equipment and beauty products throughout the U.S. and Canada. Golden Circle will market the CD greeting card in North America through a network of current as well as new distributors. When contacted, Fred Massaro, CEO of Golden Circle Corporation, explained that this was probably the most significant breakthrough in the greeting card industry since the introduction of the customized computer greeting card. When asked to explain how this new technology works, Massaro said, "The concept involves an interactive greeting card that integrates a musical CD whose range of songs ties into the theme of the card. The performers are recognized artists on the CBS/SONY label. The message and design of the cards that we have agreed to manufacture and distribute will all relate to the music as closely as possible."
A spokesman for Sony Music Special Products Marketing Division said that Sony is excited about the project and about the prospect of tapping into the ever-growing greeting card industry. When asked if he could predict the demand for such a card, Massaro maintained that based upon the successful marriage of greeting cards to CDs currently marketed throughout Europe, and the already significant demand from U.S. retailers, initial response has been very encouraging. Golden Circle will market them through highly visible point-of-purchase custom crafted motorized display racks on a consignment basis which will be serviced through a network of dealers.
Massaro, while admitting the negotiations with Sony Music Special Products have been ongoing for some months, felt that this has enabled the company to put into place all necessary manufacturing, marketing, distribution and advertising needed to initially take the concept nationally. "In the first 30 days of advertising for national distributors, we have over 200 applications on file. We firmly believe that with Sony Corp.'s confidence in our company, as well as the already favorable publicity we have received, we will create a new market niche within the greeting card industry over the next several years. We anticipate this could account for as high as 3-5 percent of total annual greeting card sales within the next two years alone."
