NO TRICK AS KIDS ENLIST FOR HALLOWEEN FOOD DRIVE.

Byline: Kevin F. Sherry Daily News Staff Writer

When Halloween rolls around, the costumed kids coming to the door could ask for food as well as treats.

A food-collection program organized by Ventura County's 4-H Club will have children from various clubs across the region asking for a can of food or a nonperishable item in addition to candy and treats. All the food collected will go to assist FOOD Share, the county's food bank.

``This is a vast community project,'' said Susie Burmester, donation solicitor for FOOD Share.

The group patterned its drive after a similar program in Arizona, said Lynnette Coverly, vice chairwoman of the 4-H Club's management board. The members figure that Halloween is the one night of the year when members of the public expect and even welcome door-to-door solicitation solicitation

With much of the focus of Halloween on children demanding treats for their own enjoyment, the public likely will react positively to trick-or-treaters requesting something that will help other people, she said.

``We're hoping for a can of food per house,'' Coverly said. ``It puts a positive spin on what some might consider a negative celebration.''

The 4-H Club will try to coordinate the groups, so that residents of one block are not bombarded with multiple requests for canned goods throughout the evening.

``We don't want to be a nuisance nuisance, in law, an act that, without legal justification, interferes with safety, comfort, or the use of property. A private nuisance (e.g., erecting a wall that shuts off a neighbor's light) is one that affects one or a few persons, while a public nuisance (e.g. , for sure,'' Coverly said.

Each child participating in the program will receive a reflector reflector: see telescope.  badge that will help homeowners identify them, she said. After collection, the children will bring their collected food to Vons and Kinko's locations, Burmester said.

The 4-H Club hopes to include members of the Boy Scouts Boy Scouts, organization of boys 11 to 17 years old, founded (1907) in Great Britain by Sir Robert (later Lord) Baden-Powell. It was incorporated in 1910 in the United States, where its appearance was connected with earlier organizations—the Sons of Daniel , the Girl Scouts Girl Scouts, recreational and service organization founded (1912) in Savannah, Ga., by Mrs. Juliette Gordon Low (1860–1927). ``It's our first year so we really don't have any idea,'' Coverly said, adding, ``They will guarantee the food stays in the community.''

``More and more it's happening,'' Burmester said. ``These kids have got to be aware of the need.''

The Halloween food roundup will be the kickoff to FOOD Share's annual holiday challenge.
