Section commissioner Jim Staunton put it best that afternoon, when he addressed the field of 89 players at the end of competition and said, ``All of you who shot 80 or better, congratulate yourself. You're moving on to regional play.'' That would be Monday's Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. It's an exciting prospect for White, who needed to shoot a then-career-best high school round of 83 two weeks ago just to earn the fourth and final Foothill League berth in the section final. ``I was just happy being here,'' she said at Diamond Bar, where she was making her first postseason appearance as an individual high school player. White made the most of it, outscoring 62 players to tie for the final non-playoff qualifying score for the regional. This is just a happy moment, I tell you. I'm just ecstatic for her.'' Almost as happy as White, who is a textbook example of how hard work can be such a difference-maker in golf. ``I only could drive the ball about 190 at first,'' she said of her freshman season. ``So I kinda Adv. 1. kinda - to some (great or small) extent; "it was rather cold"; "the party was rather nice"; "the knife is rather dull"; "I rather regret that I cannot attend"; "He's rather good at playing the cello"; "he is kind of shy" kind of, sort of, rather worked out, and now I can drive it about 210 or 220.'' Raevouri said White's progress started to show in junior golf tournaments before she started this high school season. ``It's not a total surprise,'' he said of her late-season charge, ``because she won (a Southern California PGA junior tournament) at Redhawk, and I think that's got the highest slope rating The slope rating of a golf course, typically in the US, is a measure of its difficulty for bogey golfers. What happened to her? She was reasonable, but it wasn't up to what we thought she might do. Then, here she comes at the end - look out, here comes Tracy.'' White, who said the best part of her game is her short-game play, was sharp in that area at Diamond Bar, which played to 6,014 yards for the section final and further challenged the field with quick greens. ``I had a lot of really good putts,'' she said. ``I don't think I had any three-putts, and my chipping has been really awesome lately.'' ``She's just a classic underdog,'' said Breckenridge, who has been working with White and four other Valencia starters for the three years. ``She was a little bitty thing in the ninth grade and she worked her butt off and played in a lot of tournaments. This is big for her.'' That was easy to see when the scores were posted at Diamond Bar, and the littlest Viking temporarily disappeared in a team hug.
