NO REFS FOR CITY GAME.

Byline: Daily News

What happens when a City Section boys' basketball game is scheduled but nobody bothers to send game officials?

If you're Sylmar and San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina
San Fernando (săn fərnăn`dō), city (1991 pop. 144,761), Buenos Aires prov., E Argentina. It is a district administrative center in the Greater Buenos Aires area.
, the game must go on. That's what happened Wednesday when the teams played with a Sylmar teacher and Sylmar parent acting as game officials. The City Section athletic office forgot to schedule referees for the 4 p.m. game.

Sylmar won the game, 81-54, after a 45-minute delay.

``This just goes to show you that people sometimes make mistakes,'' said Sylmar coach Bort Escoto. ``I make mistakes sometimes, and obviously the people down at the (City Section office) make mistakes sometimes. But in the best interests of the kids, we decided to make it work and play the game.''

Escoto's comments were a not-so-subtle jab at the City Section rules committee, which on Tuesday upheld a six-game forfeit penalty assessed to Sylmar when the school discovered standout guard Joe Dickson Joe Dickson is a Canadian politician. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in the 2007 provincial election, representing the riding of Ajax—Pickering. He is a member of the Liberal Party.  was mistakenly left of the team's original participation roster.

The forfeit knocked Sylmar from first to third in the Valley Mission League. Escoto and Sylmar parents will make a final appeal to a City Section rules committee on Friday.

``Hey, we're all human, and mistakes happen,'' Escoto said. ``But does that mean the kids have to suffer? I don't think it does.''
