NO ONE SERIOUSLY HURT IN BUS, PICKUP CRASH.

VALENCIA - Four young children suffered minor injuries Monday when the school bus they were riding in was broadsided by a pickup truck at a Valencia intersection, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The 6- and 7-year-olds on the Newhall School District bus were checked at a hospital and released in good condition, CHP Officer Wendy Moore said.

While the cause of the collision had not been determined, four witnesses told investigators the school bus driver, Andy Davis, 31, of Lancaster, turned left after the left-turn arrow had changed to solid green from northbound Orchard Village Road to westbound Wiley Canyon Road, Moore said.

``They said it turned right in front of the pickup,'' Davis said.

The driver of the full-size Chevrolet pickup, Carol Whitman, 30, of Saugus, apparently had a green light, Moore said. She proceeded across the intersection, tried to avoid the oncoming bus, but hit it, then bounced into a utility pole. Whitman and her 7-month-old daughter were trapped in the totaled pickup but were not seriously injured.

Six children were aboard the bus, which sustained only minor damage, Moore said.
