While homicide investigators swarmed over the house, a passer-by spotted an abandoned truck matching a description of Castro's Westland Landscaping pickup, said Deputy Ramiro Juarez of the sheriff's headquarters bureau. The truck was parked on Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. Neighbors told deputies that the Castros had been having marital problems - a suspicion backed by Castro's former wife, who arrived at the home distraught after speaking with an adult son.

``A friend of mine called me and said she'd heard about a missing man named Ramon Castro and wondered if it was Ray. I tried to call him, but there was no answer, not even his machine, so I called our son ... and he said it was his dad,'' said Leslie Quintero, divorced from Castro since 1986.

Quintero said she and Castro remained friends after the divorce and talked with each other frequently.

``Everybody loved him,'' Quintero said. ``If one of his employees wanted to go home to Mexico for a while, he would let them, and they would have a job when they came back.''

She said her ex-husband bought the landscaping route from his uncle several years ago and built up the business. Many of Westland's clients are in upscale areas of Stevenson Ranch and Valencia.

No arrests had been made by Thursday afternoon. Anyone with information is asked to call Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
