NO EASY ROAD TO TORONTO : GREENMAN WINS AGAIN ON DQ.

Byline: Kevin Modesti Daily News Staff Writer

Favorites went 0 for 15 in the weekend's major Breeders' Cup preps at Santa Anita and Belmont Park, leaving bettors with questions about many popular horses before the $11 million event Oct. 26 at Woodbine woodbine, name for several vines, among them honeysuckle and Virginia creeper. racetrack in Toronto.

The trend that began Saturday - when Cigar was among the upset victims - continued right through the $300,000 Oak Tree Turf Championship late Sunday. The race became the second straight Santa Anita feature to be decided by a disqualification that made a winner of a horse trained by Walter Greenman and owned by Gary Biszantz and Gary Vandeweghe.

The filly Admise and jockey Kent Desormeaux finished second but became $11.20 winners when Bon Point and Chris Antley were DQ'd to fifth for interfering with Khoraz and 7-5 favorite Gold and Steel late in the 1-1/4-mile grass race.

On Saturday, Savinio became the winner when Alphabet Soup was disqualified in a controversial stewards' decision following the Goodwood Breeders' Cup Handicap.

``Love the stewards,'' Greenman said Sunday, expressing a minority opinion among the 24,054 fans at the track.

It must be his week. A few days ago, Greenman said, his wife, Jean, put $6 in a Las Vegas slot machine and won a $40,000 car.

The trainer said Biszantz, who wasn't at the track, would decide if Admise will try the Breeders' Cup Mile or Turf.

The Turf Championship, formerly known as the Oak Tree Invitational, was one of four stakes in Arcadia. There were three on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Belmont Park, in New York, held four stakes each day. For Breeders' Cup handicappers it was a study marathon.

Here's how the upsets affected contenders for the seven Breeders' Cup races, which have purses ranging from $1 million to $4 million:

Sprint: Lakota Brave ($9.20), with Eddie Delahoussaye subbing for traveling Alex Solis, earned a trip to Woodbine by surging past Letthebighossroll in the $149,200 Ancient Title Breeders' Cup Handicap on Sunday. The 7-year-old equaled the stakes record with 6 furlongs in 1:08.

``His next race should be his best one,'' trainer Bruce Headley said, noting the Sprint will be his third start since ankle surgery.

At Belmont, Lord Carson ($19.80) and Shane Sellers beat Sprint favorite Honour and Glory for a D. Wayne Lukas-trained exacta in the Boojum Handicap.

Juvenile Fillies: At Belmont, Storm Song ($7.70) and Craig Perret won the Frizette by four lengths to turn the tables on Matron winner and Juvenile Fillies favorite Sharp Cat. Nick Zito trains Storm Song, Lukas has Sharp Cat.

The day before, Lukas' City Band joined his usual slate of Breeders' Cup fillies by winning the Oak Leaf.

Distaff distaff: see spinning.: Both top contenders finished second Sunday. Jewel Princess ran well after a 2-1/2-month layoff, but Top Rung ($13) and Chicago-based rider Earlie Fires held her off in the $178,450 Lady's Secret Breeders' Cup Handicap. Serena's Song couldn't hold off Yanks Music ($6.60) and John Velazquez in the Beldame at Belmont.

Jewel Princess trainer Wally Dollase was thrilled with her prep. Yanks Music trainer Leo O'Brien said he would pre-enter the 3-year-old filly in both the Distaff and the Classic.

In another Distaff prep Sunday, the Spinster Stakes at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., California-based favorite Different and Chris McCarron beat Top Secret as Urbane and Solis finished fourth. The Argentina-bred Different is ineligible for the Breeders' Cup.

Mile: Allied Forces' connections promised to consider the shorter of the Breeders' Cup turf races after the 3-year-old and Richard Migliore scored a $24.80 victory in the Jamaica Handicap at Belmont. Odds-on Sir Cat was seventh.

Saturday, Mile contender Da Hoss needed the outing and was beaten by former claimer Same Old Wish in the Kelso.

In Arcadia on Saturday, Urgent Request became a Mile possibility, winning the Oak Tree Breeders' Cup Mile over Megan's Interco, who will now settle for the Nov. 2 California Cup Mile.

Juvenile: So unexpected was the $20 win by Free House and Desormeaux in the $200,000 Norfolk Stakes at Santa Anita on Sunday that owners John Toffan and Trudy McCaffery said they forget if the 2-year-old son of Smokester is Breeders' Cup-eligible. Swiss Yodeler finished third at odds-on.

Saturday in New York, Ordway won the Moet Champagne to knock runner-up Traitor out of the Juvenile. Third-place Gold Tribute - who was second in the Del Mar Futurity - is still pointing for Toronto.

Turf: Actually, the weekend may have affected the Breeders' Cup's 1-1/2-mile, $2 million race less than any of them. Admise and Gold and Steel are possibilities out of the Oak Tree race. Diplomatic Jet, who won the Turf Classic Invitational over Awad at Belmont on Saturday, may go to Woodbine to take on the Turf's traditional European invasion.

Classic: Skip Away, who upset Cigar in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont, won't challenge him again in the Breeders' Cup's $4 million race, trainer Sonny Hine indicated Sunday. Owner Carolyn Hine - his wife - would have to pay $480,000 because the 3-year-old wasn't nominated.

``The next race is in February - the Donn Handicap (in Florida),'' Sonny Hine said.

In California on Sunday, trainer David Hofmans said he won't challenge the stewards' Goodwood ruling. The race should produce two Classic starters: Alphabet Soup and second-place Dare and Go - Cigar's upsetter at Del Mar.
