NO CATCH TO ANGELS' VICTORY FINLEY, WASHBURN LEAD WAY PAST MARINERS ANGELS 5, SEATTLE 0.

Byline: Gabe Lacques Staff Writer

SEATTLE - A breakout game from Steve Finley Steven Allen Finley (born March 12 1965, in Union City, Tennessee) is a Major League Baseball center fielder who bats and throws left-handed. He currently is a free agent, and has been working out on a regular basis since his release, hopeful a call will come from a team looking  and a sterling start from Jarrod Washburn Jarrod Michael Washburn (born August 13, 1974 in La Crosse, Wisconsin) is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Seattle Mariners. Drafted by the California Angels in the 2nd round of the 1995 amateur draft out of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Washburn won the final game  meant the Angels could sit back and appreciate perhaps the greatest catch of Ichiro Suzuki's career, knowing it wouldn't affect their prosperity Monday night.

Finley responded to his forced one-day vacation with a double and two-run home run and Washburn finished four outs shy of his second career shutout, spearheading the Angels' 5-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners The Seattle Mariners are a professional baseball team based in Seattle, Washington. Washburn put together consecutive strong starts for the first time this season and Finley fouled off five two-strike pitches from Ryan Franklin Ryan Ray Franklin (born March 5, 1973) is a Major League Baseball player. Franklin is a right-handed pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals.

before ripping a two-run homer that helped the Angels seize control of the game in the top of the fourth.

Garret Anderson Garret Joseph Anderson (born June 30, 1972 in Los Angeles, California) is a Major League Baseball left fielder who has played his entire career for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  also smacked a two-run homer, but his bid for a second two-run shot died in jaw-dropping fashion.

crowd of 24,184 rose for a standing ovation. Washburn could appreciate the feat a little more with a five-run lead in hand.

``Every time we're here, it seems he does something crazy you shake your head and laugh at,'' Washburn said. ``He's one of the most exciting players to ever play the game.

``I hate pitching to him. I love watching him play.''

Suzuki claimed he never practiced such an acrobatic maneuver. But he has imagined it, so, he said, it was possible.

``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

if it's the best catch I've ever made,'' he said. ``I've imagined making that play, going up there like that. So going up there like that was something I knew I could do.''

Washburn, however, ensured that would be the Mariners' lone highlight.

The left-hander broke his good start-bad start pattern by lasting 7 2/3 innings for the second consecutive outing. Brendan Donnelly Brendan Kevin Donnelly (b. July 4, 1971 in Washington, D.C.) is a Major League Baseball relief pitcher with the Boston Red Sox.

Once again mixing in a potent blend of off-speed pitches, Washburn gave up just four hits, struck out five and walked three. He retired 13 of 14 batters he faced from the end of the fourth to the eighth, before a walk and a Randy Winn double ended his night.

Washburn recorded 14 groundball outs, an indication his slider A block of material that holds the read/write head of a magnetic disk. See flying head. , split-finger fastball and changeup are mixing splendidly with his fastball. He's now 2-0 with a 2.72 ERA.

``It's something new for me,'' he said of his penchant for inducing grounders. ``I kind of like it. I feel real good on the mound and that's the key - throwing anything in any count.''

Meanwhile, Finley seemed to benefit from a day off, which manager Mike Scioscia gave him for the first time this season on Sunday after Finley hit just .149 in April, with an 0-for-14 skid being the low point.

But Finley drew a walk in his first at-bat and then put on a hitting clinic to end his hitless streak in the second, following five foul balls with his fifth homer for a 2-0 lead.
