NO BIG NAMES BUT PLENTY OF TALENT ON TAP.

Byline: GREG WILCOX Golf

There is not a marquee player among the international field of 75 facing a tough final exam Monday at El Caballero cab·al·le·ro
n. pl. cab·al·le·ros
1. A Spanish gentleman; a cavalier.

2. A man who is skilled in riding and managing horses; a horseman.
Country Club for four spots in the U.S. Open golf championship. But the field won't lack for champions who have been forces in Southern California amateur circles, which makes this an event worth watching.

There is quite an age range, too, from precocious teen-age talent Anthony Kim of La Quinta to elder statesman Mitch Voges of Simi Valley.

Kim, 15, who once attended Campbell Hall in North Hollywood, recently won the CIF Southern Section CIF Southern Section (commonly abbreviated as CIFSS) is the largest of the ten sections which comprise the California Interscholastic Federation. Its membership includes most public and private high schools in Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, Santa Barbara,  individual title. Voges won the 1991 U.S. Amateur title, which is considered a major championship.

Other champions of note include Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys, winner of four Southern California Golf Association titles; Northridge resident Tim Hogarth, who won the 1996 U.S. Public Links title and the 1999 California Amateur championship; Greg Padilla of Tempe, Ariz., winner of the 1998 SCGA SCGA Southern California Golf Association

Amateur; David Hobby of San Pedro, who won the SCGA Amateur in 1983, and Jason Allred of Ashland, Ore., winner of the 1997 U.S. Junior Amateur.

The only PGA Tour player competing in the event is David Sutherland, who had his best year in 2000, winning $498,749, good for 96th on the money list.

He entered only one tournament this year, the Touchstone Energy Open, and withdrew because of a shoulder injury after a first-round 72. He underwent surgery, received a medical exemption and hopes to play full time on the tour next year, said Rich Katz, his agent.

``He's undergoing rather intense rehab and working up to get back to full strength by the close of the year,'' Katz said.

El Cab's tournament will have an international cast thanks to several Asian players. The field features Thongchai Jaidee and Prayad Marksaeng of Bangkok, Thailand; Koji Yamamoto of Naka-gun Ibaraki, Japan, and Yasuharu Imano of Ichikawa-City Chiba, Japan.

The event is 36 holes and free for spectators.

The golf will be pressure-packed and it is a good chance to walk El Cab, one of the best golf courses in Southern California.

First-round play starts at 7 a.m., with threesomes teeing off from holes 1 and 9 at nine-minute intervals. The second round is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m.

--Story time: There are plenty of feel-good stories at this week's U.S. Women's Open at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pine, N.C.

First is the course itself, which is owned by Peggy Kirk Bell Peggy Kirk Bell (born October 28 1921) is a former American professional golfer and golf instructor. She was is a founding member of the LPGA and a strong advocate of women's golf.

Raised in Findlay, Ohio, Peggy started playing golf at age 17.
, who has acquired legendary status in women's golf. She was one of her sport's best players for years and bought the course with her husband Bullet in 1953.

Bell is 79 but runs the place and drives to work in her favorite car, a white 1964 Lincoln convertible with suicide doors.

Then there is the amateur Carol Semple Thompson, who has competed in 85 U.S. Golf Association championships. These include 11 Curtis Cup teams, and she won the U.S. Women's Amateur in 1973. This will be her 31st Open, two shy of Marlene Hagge's record.

Finally, there is Brenda Corrie Kuehn, who will compete while eight months pregnant. She'll walk the course and wear men's golf shirts.

Her doctor says playing golf is no more likely to induce labor than taking it easy. We'll see.

SPOTLIGHT

MORGAN PRESSEL

OK, so we really haven't heard of her until this week, but there's a good reason. She's only 13 years old. But she's a big deal this week as the youngest qualifier for the U.S. Women's Open. And she does have a game. Pressel qualified by shooting a 2-under 70 at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla. Her caddie then was her uncle, former tennis star Aaron Krickstein. This week she's got some age on her bag. Pressel's caddie is 68-year-old Willie McRae, who has toted for Arnold Palmer, Gene Sarazen and Tommy Bolt.
