NL/NL celebrates 40th anniversary.


The Newsletter on Newsletters was founded by Moris T. Hoversten and Philip Philip, tetrarch of Ituraea
Philip, d. A.D. 34, tetrarch of Ituraea, son of Herod the Great. He was perhaps the ablest of the Herod dynasty. He is mentioned in the Gospel of St. Luke.

While a handful of subscription newsletters had been around for a long time, the total number was probably fewer than 100. But the founders' timing was uncanny. During the 1963-1968 Johnson Administration There have been two Presidents of the United States with the surname "Johnson":
  • Andrew Johnson Administration, 17th President of the United States, 1865–1869.
and
  • Lyndon B. Johnson Administration, 36th President of the United States, 1963–1969.

In 1968, Howard Penn Hudson acquired NL/NL and expanded it from a 4-page monthly (with two pages given over to listings of new news-letters) to an 8-page twice-monthly.

Hudson was also instrumental in founding what is now the Newsletter & Electronic Publishers Association, in 1976.

In 2001, Paul Swift, NL/NL's editor since 1982 (serving in that capacity for more than half of the newsletter's existence), acquired the newsletter, which now covers an industry of many thousands of print and online newsletter and specialized-information publications.
