NJ memorial attracts 700 submissions.

New Jersey received 688 submissions for consideration for the State's September 11 Memorial.

"I am extremely pleased with the overwhelming interest New Jersey's memorial has generated," said Gov. James E. McGreevey.

"It is exceptionally important that families, friends, and survivors have a place to remember and pay tribute to their loved ones lost. Today, we are one step closer to making the memorial a reality."

In December, the Governor announced that New Jersey had begun the search for a world-class memorial design concept for the State's September 11th Memorial.

The Memorial will be located at the northeast end of Liberty State Park and will be dedicated to the nearly 700 New Jersey men, women and children, who were lost in the tragic attacks.

Applicants were asked to submit proposals that reflect the legacies of the lives that were lost; communicate the course of events on September 11th, capture personal and societal feelings of loss; and celebrate the strength of character and resolve that our country witnessed that day.

The open competition is a world-class, two- stage design competition, the purpose of which is to select an inspiring memorial design.

All proposals will be reviewed by the Professional Advisory Committee, which is composed of distinguished professionals with extensive experience in the art, architecture, planning and design fields.

The Professional Advisory Committee will review all proposals received in Stage One--narrowing the selection process to no more than ten finalists. The finalists will then be judged by the members of the New Jersey's Family and Survivor Memorial Committee.
