NISSAN OPEN NOTEBOOK: FLU BUG KNOCKS WOODS OUT.

``Everyone saw how Tiger felt this week struggling with the flu, and he just can't shake it,'' said Woods' agent, Mark Steinberg, after phoning tournament officials early Saturday morning to notify them of Woods's withdrawal.

``He feels awful. This is an event he loves to play in and strives to win. Tiger doesn't want to pull out of any event ever, much less the Nissan Open in his hometown.''

Woods, a Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  junior golf legend who won a record three consecutive U.S. Junior Amateur championships growing up in Orange County, was bidding for his first title in nine Nissan Open starts as a professional - eight of those at Riviera.

The closest he has come was in the 1998 Nissan at Valencia Country Club, used that year because Riviera was the site of the U.S. Senior Open. Woods lost in a playoff to Billy Mayfair William Fred "Billy" Mayfair (born August 6, 1966) is an American PGA Tour golfer.

Mayfair was born in Phoenix, Arizona, and now lives in Scottsdale, Arizona where he plays out of Estrella Mountain Range Golf Club. He went to Arizona State University and won the 1986 U.S.
 at Valencia, then finished tied for second in '99 at Riviera - two shots behind Ernie Els.

His best other Nissan finishes at Riviera were a tie for fifth in 2003

and a tie for seventh in 2004, both of those events won by Mike Weir.

--Happy camper: He made three bogeys, no birdies and wound up tied for 74th among the 81 players remaining in the weekend field.

But Scott Miller, the former Moorpark Country Club head pro who starts as head pro at North Ranch in Thousand Oaks on Wednesday, couldn't have been happier Saturday.
