NINTENDO GAME DEVELOPER ANNOUNCES CAMPAIGN TO LIMIT
TIME KIDS SPEND ON VIDEO GAMES
'Responsible Play' Sales Materials to be Unveiled
at Jan. 9-11 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Video game developer Hudson Soft USA, a Nintendo licensee, announced today that it will produce materials advising its young customers to limit the time they spend playing video games.
"We want to get a message out to kids that video games are just one of life's pleasures and that there are other important and fun things they should investigate," said Hudson Soft USA Marketing Manager Kevin Sullivan.
"Though much has been said about the mesmerizing nature of video games, no game manufacturer has taken the initiative to remind its young customers to play responsibly and balance video games with other activities," said Sullivan. "Hudson Soft has decided to take that leadership position and calls on other game manufacturers to follow suit."
The company's point-of-purchase materials, which will be displayed in retail outlets throughout the United States, will carry illustrations of Master Higgins(TM), a character in several Hudson Soft games, who is pictured saying: "Play video games responsibly. Spend time on school, fitness and family too; there's a whole world to explore."
As part of the program, Hudson Soft USA will establish a phone support line and provide a pamphlet entitled "Master Higgins(TM) 10 Tips for Responsible Play" (a guide describing ways to diplomatically regulate video play) for parents who feel their children spend too much time playing video games.
For young gamers who volunteer to limit their video game play, Hudson Soft USA will offer membership in a special club which includes a free quarterly newsletter and membership card.
Mock-ups of the point-of-purchase displays will be unveiled at the Hudson Soft booth at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Jan. 9 and will be launched in June.
According to Hudson Soft USA Executive Vice President Bernie Yamada, the American "Responsible Play" campaign is part of the company's longtime commitment to parents of gamers. The campaign was first launched in Japan in 1987 when Hudson Soft and Japanese video game celebrity Takahashi Toshiyuki traveled the country in a whistle- stop train tour to bring a message of sensible video game play to Japanese children and their parents and teachers.
Takahashi, 31, a Hudson Soft employee, children's television host and comic book hero in Japan, was the model for the Master Higgins(TM) character featured in the popular Adventure Island game series. Takahashi and Hudson Soft executives will be at the CES Show to bring the message to the consumer electronics industry.
South San Francisco-based Hudson Soft USA Inc. is the U.S. subsidiary of software and game publisher Hudson Soft Co. Ltd. of Sapporo, Japan. The parent company was the first developer to be licensed for Nintendo's 8-bit NES system. Hudson Soft games include Adventure Island, Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball, Atomic Punk and Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu.
