NIKE COMMUTERS PROGRAM OFF TO A RUNNING START

NIKE COMMUTERS PROGRAM OFF TO A RUNNING START
BEAVERTON, Ore., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Nike Inc. (NYSE: NKE, PSE)

founded by a runner and his coach, revives its original corporate name this month with a program in the spirit of its roots -- the BRS (Bike, Run/Walk/Skate) Commuter. Nike Inc. announced today it has inaugurated a new environmental program with a runner's spirit: the BRS Program, which rewards employees who save energy in their commute to work.
The BRS Program -- which borrows from Nike's original corporate name, Blue Ribbon Sports -- kicked off last month as one leg in a three-part effort to reduce energy used by Nike employees commuting to the World Headquarters Campus in Beaverton.
BRS, and a companion CAR-POOL Program, awards employee store vouchers equivalent to one dollar per day to those who commute by muscle power or car-pool to work at the Nike World Campus Headquarters. A third element, the TRI-MET program, will entitle employees who take public transportation to a $21 monthly discount off their commuter's passes.
Members of all three programs will be eligible for product and other prize incentives at monthly drawings. Car-poolers will receive preferred parking at the 175-acre Nike Campus. And cyclists will receive discounts and services at a neighboring bike shop.
"Concern for the environment should begin at home, and these programs which are local, incremental and incentive-based, will help contribute to environmental efforts right where we live and work as a company," said Richard K. Donahue, Nike president and chief operating officer. "With 1,600 employees on our World Campus now, and more than 2,000 projected by January 1993, we think the BRS, CAR-POOL and TRI-MET Programs will make a significant contribution to local municipal efforts to ease traffic congestion and lower pollution. The program will also stimulate continued interest in fitness among our own employees."
Nike Inc. is the world's largest sports and fitness company.
