NIKE ANNOUNCES VICTORY IN SPANISH COURT

BEAVERTON, Ore., Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- NIKE Inc. (NYSE: NKE) announced today that a court in Barcelona, Spain had ruled in favor of NIKE and has upheld the validity of trademark registrations originally issued to the company in June of 1991. In addition, the court ruling lifts an injunction imposed on NIKE that has kept the company from selling NIKE branded apparel since March of 1991. Finally, the court nullified the conflicting trademarks held by Juan Amigo Freixas for lack of use.
In response to the victorious decision, NIKE's General Counsel Lindsay Stewart said, "The ruling allows us to immediately begin selling NIKE apparel in Spain, and to continue to do so throughout any appeal process. We are confident that the court's decision will be upheld on appeal."
This clears the way for NIKE to offer the Spanish consumer a full line of sports and fitness apparel and accessories to fully complement an extensive footwear line. NIKE generated sales of approximately $48 million in Spain during the fiscal year ended May 31, 1993, with more than ninety percent coming from the sale of athletic footwear.
According to NIKE President Richard Donahue, "Basketball and football are both hugely popular throughout Spain, and both symbolize the type of opportunities NIKE will now be able to fully pursue. In basketball, NIKE is the market leader around the world, while football is an untapped market for us; being able to outfit and associate our promotional athletes with authentic athletic apparel will greatly help us grow our business in Spain.
Donahue went on to say, "To be sure, we have been handicapped by the court injunction that has been in place since March 1991. As an example, we work with many of the key football players on Spanish clubs including Romario of FC Barcelona, Bebeto of La Coruna, and top American Tab Ramos of Real Betis in Seville. Until today, we have been unable to effectively use those players to help showcase the breadth of the NIKE line."
NIKE Inc., based in Beaverton, Oregon, USA, is the world's leading designer and marketer of authentic athletic footwear, apparel and accessories for a wide variety of sports and fitness activities. Worldwide revenues for the trailing twelve month period ended Aug. 31, 1993, increased 11 percent to $3.9 billion with $1.1 billion or 28 percent coming from Europe.
