LNG LNG (liquefied natural gas): see under natural gas. Venture: A US consortium of ExxonMobil, Chevron, Texaco and Conoco in Feb. 2001 signed an MoU with the government to determine the feasibility of another LNG venture, called West Niger Delta LNG project, for export to the US and other markets. Abuja approved the project in Oct. The group is concentrating on non-associated gas reserves in the western Niger Delta states of Ondo, Edo and Delta. Presidential Advisor on energy Rilwanu Lukman Rilwanu Lukman was the OPEC Secretary General from 1 January 1995 to 31 December 2000. He hails from Zaria in Kaduna State of Nigeria. Phillips, one of the first US companies to venture into LNG in Alaska in the late 1960s, is betting mainly on the American market. ENI believes the Italian market will absorb a major part of the LNG. Demand for natural gas in Italy is expected to rise from 68 BCM/y (6.6 BCF/d) in 2000 to more than 90 BCM/y by 2010. With Egypt having four separate LNG ventures, including one involving ENI and another involving Shell, Texaco is leading a 4m t/y LNG project in Angola. This is among many new LNG export and import projects worldwide. Europe-Bound & Regional Export Pipelines: Abuja and Algiers are negotiating a long-dormant project to have a gas pipeline to Europe running from Ajaokuta in central Nigeria to pass through Abuja and Kano in the north. It would then cross Niger to southern Algeria and link up with Algeria's line to Europe through Spain.
