, was chosen Wednesday night by the Hart Union High School District board from a pool of three candidates.

Nielsen will replace Gary Fuller, who is retiring at the end of this year after 10 years in the top post.

"I am very excited with the appointment," Fuller said in a prepared statement Thursday. "He is very capable of providing leadership to the Hart High family in the future years."

Nielsen was assistant principal at Hart for six years before a transfer a year ago to Saugus High.

"Nielsen is familiar with the Hart community, and we know he will work hard to do a good job," Hart board member Gloria Mercado-Fortine said.

Rob Gapper, Hart's chief operations officer, said Nielsen's knowledge of the Hart campus and management of renovations at Saugus will help him deal with the planned modernization at the 60-year-old Hart campus.
