NICKELODEON PLANNING MOVE; KIDS NETWORK'S RELOCATION TO BURBANK COMES AMID COMPETITION FOR VALLEY SPACE.

Byline: Dave McNary Daily News Staff Writer

Nickelodeon announced Thursday it will shift its animation operations from Studio City to Burbank early next year, allowing the children's network to double space and staffing.

Nickelodeon, which currently produces ``The Angry Beavers'' and ``Hey Arnold'' at two office buildings on Laurel Canyon Boulevard Laurel Canyon Boulevard is a major street in the city of Los Angeles, California. It starts off at Polk Street in Sylmar in the northern San Fernando Valley near the junction of the San Diego (Interstate 405) and the Golden State Freeways (Interstate 5).  and Vineland Avenue, plans to occupy 72,000 square feet in the 200 block of West Olive Street and name the facility Nicktoons Animation. Staffing will double to about 400 employees.

The move underscores surging demand for animated product and for usable space for the entertainment industry in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
. The area's vacancy rates for prime office buildings and industry space are at their lowest levels in two decades.

``The competition for entertainment space in the Valley is very cutthroat right now,'' said Jack Kyser, an analyst with the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Economic Development Corp. ``It's not a blow to Los Angeles, but more like a tap on the face.''

Kyser noted Burbank is already home to Walt Disney Noun 1. Walt Disney - United States film maker who pioneered animated cartoons and created such characters as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck; founded Disneyland (1901-1966)

plans to move its 600-employee animation operations into Glendale in December.

Nickelodeon, a Viacom Inc. subsidiary, said the new facility will be able to handle up to five productions at once. It will include 175 work stations, screening rooms, recording and mixing stages, post-production facilities, a combination theater and gym, a miniature golf course, a basketball court, a fountain with Nickelodeon's trademark green slime Green slime may refer to:

  • Green slime (You Can't Do That on Television), "I don't know"
  • Intelligence Corps, of the British Army
 and a library.

Viacom announced in September it planned to double Nickelodeon's animation output over the next five years by spending $350 million during that period, but it did not disclose Thursday how much it will spend on Nicktoons Animation. It also named animation veteran and Columbia TriStar executive Mark Taylor People known as Mark Taylor include:
  • Mark Taylor (actor), Canadian television actor (Drop the Beat)
  • Mark Taylor (author), professor at Rushmore University, Distinguished Logistics Professional, expert on computerized shipping systems
as vice president-general manager to oversee operations of the new studio.

The move to Burbank comes six weeks after another Viacom unit, cable operator MTV Networks, moved its West Coast operations from Universal City to Santa Monica because it could not find enough space for its operations in the Valley.

J. Richard Leyner, vice president of Encino-based Capital Commercial Real Estate, said demand by entertainment companies has led to a squeeze on properties in Burbank, Glendale and Studio City. Leyner said such firms are now seeking space in adjoining areas such as Encino and Sherman Oaks.

Additionally, developers have started planning major office projects for the Valley area, including a six-story facility with 585,000 square feet in Burbank and a 24-story, 500,000-square-foot project in Glendale.
