NHTSA ALERTS PARENTS ABOUT RECALL OF GUARDIAN CHILD SAFETY SEATS

NHTSA ALERTS PARENTS ABOUT RECALL OF GUARDIAN CHILD SAFETY SEATS
WASHINGTON, July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today urged owners of certain Guardian child safety seats to contact the manufacturer for a free repair kit because the seat is involved in a safety recall campaign.
NHTSA said the seats failed to meet a federal safety standard that requires a force of at least 9 pounds to depress a push-button that releases the buckle on the seat's belt assembly. The provision is intended to deter children from releasing the buckle.
According to NHTSA, the safety recall involves 26,000 Guardian child safety seats manufactured by Takata-Gerico (Gerry) between Jan. 31 and May 3, 1990. The date of manufacture is stamped in ink on a label on the side of the seat.
Owners who call the manufacturer for a repair kit will receive a new buckle, plus tools and instructions for installing it. Owners should call Gerry toll-free at 800-845-8813 to obtain the kit.
The safety agency strongly urged parents to continue using these Guardian seats while waiting for the replacement kit. Properly restrained children are much less likely to suffer crash injuries, NHTSA said.
Consumers who have questions about this or any safety recall campaign should call NHTSA's toll-free Auto Safety Hotline at 800-424-9393.
