NHL ROUNDUP : PANTHERS TAMED BY HEBERT, DUCKS.

Byline: Associated Press

Goaltender Guy Hebert stopped 28 shots for his 13th career shutout and fourth this season as the Mighty Ducks beat host Florida 3-0 Wednesday for their first victory ever against the Panthers.

Dmitri Mironov scored a goal and assisted on another and Paul Kariya had two assists for the Ducks.

The win snapped the Panthers' spell over the Western Conference this season and continued their offensive woes. Florida - which has scored only two goals in three games - had an 8-0-3 record against the West before the loss.

Both teams entered the NHL in 1993, but Florida went to the Stanley Cup Finals last season and compiled 3-0-1 record against the Ducks over three years.

The Panthers squandered a chance to climb back into a first-place tie with Philadelphia in the Atlantic Division. Florida blew six power-play chances, missed opened nets and took bad penalties.

Brian Bellows gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead at 5:32 of the first when he redirected Mironov's slapshot past Panthers goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck on the power play at 5:32.

J.F. Jomphe made it 2-0 at 12:25 of the third when he broke into the slot and lifted the puck over Vanbiesbrouck's glove.

Mironov finished the scoring when he deflected Kariya's shot into the net at 14:39 of the final period.

Washington 3, Hartford 2: Steve Konowalchuk scored with 1:59 left in overtime as the host Capitals downed the Whalers. The loss was Hartford's fifth straight on the road and its first defeat in nine overtime games this season.

Konowalchuk was attempting a centering pass from the backboards, but the puck bounced off the pads of prone goaltender Jason Muzzatti and into the net.

The Capitals improved to 1-2-3 in overtime, while Hartford fell to 2-1-6.

Down 2-0 on a pair of goals by Peter Bondra, the Whalers used a power-play goal by Steven Rice and a shorthanded score by Curtis Leschyshyn to pull even late in the second period. Hartford then killed a five-minute penalty in the third period to temporarily preserve the tie.

Montreal 6, Dallas 4: Patrice Brisbois snapped a 4-4 tie with 10:04 to play after teammate Brian Savage had evened the score 2:16 earlier and the Canadiens defeated the host Stars.

The win stretched Montreal's road unbeaten streak to six games with three wins and three ties.

Dallas' Joe Nieuwendyk scored two goals in a span of 1:45 early in the third period as the Stars rallied for a 4-3 lead. Nieuwendyk notched his 10th of the season on a rebound, then added his 11th on a scramble in front of the net with 14:04 remaining.

But the Canadiens answered back on Savage's 14th goal of the season and then Brisebois scored his second to give Montreal a 5-4 advantage.

Ottawa 3, Boston 2: Alexandre Daigle's second-period goal gave the host Senators a victory over the Bruins - their first triumph over Boston in 22 games since rejoining the NHL in the 1992-93 season.

Alexei Yashin and Tom Chorske also scored for the Senators, who were 0-20-1 against Boston in the past four-plus seasons.

KINGS vs. VANCOUVER

Time: 7 p.m., General Motors Place

TV/Radio: No TV; KISS-AM (1150).

Kings (13-21-4) update: They were hoping enforcer Matt Johnson (shoulder sprain) and defenseman Sean O'Donnell (left wrist sprain) would be able to return from injuries, but they were ruled out after practice Wednesday. The Kings have only one win in their past 10 games (1-8-1) and are last in the Western Conference, but they have the chance to make up ground. Thirty-six of their remaining 44 games are against conference opponents, including nine games during January.

Canucks (16-19-1) update: They have lost their past four games, surrendering an average of 6.25 goals. Right wing Alexander Mogilny has 15 goals and 33 points, both team-highs. Goalie Corey Hirsch has surrendered an average of 3.24 goals in 22 games with an .899 save percentage.
