NHL ROUNDUP\Hicks' goal in overtime lifts Ducks past Canucks.

Byline: Associated Press

Alex Hicks scored 1:34 into overtime Wednesday night to lift the Ducks to a 2-1 road victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

Hicks converted a goalmouth pass from Joe Sacco for his seventh goal of the season.

Bobby Dollas scored the other Ducks goal against Vancouver goaltender Corey Hirsch.

Esa Tikkanen, on a power play, was the only Vancouver shooter to get the puck past acrobatic goaltender Guy Hebert of the Ducks.

Vancouver outshot the Ducks 34-21. The Canucks hit two goal posts in the scoreless third period and a crossbar in overtime before Hicks got the winner against the flow of play.

Hebert made brilliant saves in the third period against Bret Hedican, Trevor Linden and Martin Geinas.

Toronto 2, Chicago 2: Kirk Muller, acquired in a trade on Tuesday, scored the Maple Leafs' first goal in his debut with the team and Mike Gartner scored with 4:08 left in the third period as Toronto earned a tie at home.

N.Y. Rangers 4, Philadelphia 4: The Rangers got another great night from Mark Messier (two goals, two assists) and extended their home-ice unbeaten streak to 22, but they had to settle for a tie when Rod Brind'Amour scored for the Flyers with 1:09 left.

Pittsburgh 4, Ottawa 3: With a new coach (Jaques Martin) and a new goaltender (Damian Rhodes), the Senators played well but couldn't overcome third-period goals by the Penguins' Peter Nedved and Joe Dziedzic in Kanata, Ontario.

It was the third straight Ottawa loss in the new $217-million Palladium, but this one gave 17,149 fans plenty to cheer about. The crowd gave Ottawa three standing ovations, including one at the final buzzer.

Detroit 4, San Jose 2: At Detroit, the Red Wings earned their fifth straight victory, holding the hapless Sharks without a shot on goal in the second period.

Buffalo 4, Hartford 2: Derek Plante scored on a slap shot early in the third period to lift the Sabres past the Whalers at Buffalo.

St. Louis 6, Winnipeg 5: Brian Noonan scored midway through the third period to lift the Blues to a road victory.

Calgary 4, N.Y. Islanders 1: Theoren Fleury scored one goal and added two assists to lead the Flames to a victory over the Islanders at Calgary.

Dallas 5, Edmonton 3: At Edmonton, defenseman Kevin Hatcher's third goal of the night snapped a tie.
