NHL NOTES: STUMPEL STILL SORE, AIMING FOR OPENER.

Byline: Roger Phillips

The Kings know that when he is healthy, Jozef Stumpel will be their No. 1 center. The question is: When will he be healthy.

Stumpel twisted an ankle on Sept. 13, the first day of practice, and hasn't played in any of the Kings' three exhibition games.

He skated Monday and Tuesday, then received a cortisone cortisone (kôr`tĭsōn'), steroid hormone whose main physiological effect is on carbohydrate metabolism. It is synthesized from cholesterol in the outer layer, or cortex, of the adrenal gland under the stimulation of adrenocorticotropic  injection, preventing him from skating Wednesday. The Kings are hoping he'll be able to skate today, but he is not expected to play in Friday's exhibition game against Phoenix at the Forum.

Stumpel said he is not concerned that his injury will keep him from playing when the Kings open the regular season in Edmonton on Oct. 10.

``Hopefully, in several more days I'll be set to go,'' he said. ``Ankles always take a little longer. I'm trying to get treatment every day. I want to get back as soon as possible.''

In other injury news, defenseman Steve Duchesne bruised a hip in Tuesday's victory over the Mighty Ducks, did not skate Wednesday and is day to day. Rookie center Jason Morgan remains sidelined with knee tendinitis. Defenseman Jaroslav Modry bruised his right thigh against the Ducks and is day to day.

Roster cuts: The Kings trimmed their roster to 34, sending defensemen Sean Blanchard and Peter Hogan and center Chris Schmidt to the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League
