He took the position in 1989 and was succeeded by Roger Goodell, who was elected to the position on August 8, 2006.  said Wednesday as a two-day meeting of league owners concluded.

Also expected to receive consideration for the 2009 and 2010 Super Bowls are the Jets' proposed stadium in Manhattan and a renovated Giants Stadium at the Meadowlands. Jets owner Woody Woody

Johnson made a presentation to owners Wednesday.

A decision on at least one Super Bowl probably will be reached next spring, at either the March or May owners' meetings, Tagliabue said.

The promise of Super Bowls as an incentive for building new or dramatically renovated stadiums brought the event to Houston last year and to Jacksonville, Fla., Detroit and Phoenix in three of the next four years.

As the league pursues construction of a state-of-the-art stadium at either the Rose Bowl, the Coliseum Coliseum: see Colosseum.  or a site in Carson, Tagliabue said there has been strong sentiment in the past about putting a Super Bowl in Los Angeles, where it hasn't been since the Rose Bowl played host to the 1993 game.

``That's one of the things we're going to discuss with our advisory committee this fall,'' he said. ``We had discussed that about 15 months ago. In fact, we had reported at one point to the membership that the advisory committee had felt that Los Angeles needed to be part of Super Bowl planning, whether or not we had a team there. I'm sure that subject will be taken up again with the committee.''
