WHITE boys from the poorest homes make less progress at secondary school than any other group, it was claimed yesterday.
A Government report found they suffered through lack of ambition, a low opinion of their own abilities and did not complete homework.
The research warned of a gaping divide between the academic achievement of poor white pupils and their peers from wealthier homes.
Dr Steve Strand at Warwick University, who did the study, said: "White British boys in general but particularly from low socio-economic classification homes made the poorest progress."
OUR NOSES CAN SNIFF OUT DANGER
HUMAN noses are adapted by evolution to smell danger, scientists have learned.
In tests, volunteers' sense of smell became more sensitive when given electric shocks. Researchers believe nature invented the system so we recognise odours linked to threat. Dr Wen Li at Northwestern University in Illinois said: "It's evolutionary."
