"Astarte" [is] the 1st new ballet by dir. Robert Joffrey since the co. was reorganized.... Joffrey hints the work may be "as modern as a psychedelic fantasy...." OCTOBER--The other big event here has been the visit of 23 dancers of New York City Ballet New York City Ballet, one of the foremost American dance companies of the 20th cent. It was founded by Lincoln Kirstein and George Balanchine as the Ballet Society in 1946. to the Edinburgh Festival.... Jacques d'Amboise's unexpected absence through illness led to the cancellation of "Movements".... Peter Martins was flown in from Denmark to dance the title part in "Apollo".... 1968 APRIL--In a drastic action, the House of Representatives has cut the total amount of money available annually for Nat'l Foundation on the Arts & Humanities projects from $20.5 million to $11.2 million.... The diverting of money to finance the war also played a part in prompting the resignation of Dr. Charles Frankel.... JUNE--The new Broadway musical, "Hair," has Julie Arenal listed as the dance director. She has used everything from ritual to rock in creating movements for the cast.... The National Ballet's long-awaited premiere perf. of "Giselle" was a great success. Originally postponed from March, the ballet was postponed again from April 5 because of the riots in Washington, finally given its first perf. April 12.... JULY--NYC Ballet principal Arthur Mitchell has announced plans to form a new dance co. in Harlem.... The Paul Taylor Dance Co., currently on tour in Europe, became a victim of the May student-worker protests in Paris. Following co's 2nd SRO See Self-regulatory organization. SRO See self-regulatory organization (SRO). perf., May 15, at the Odeon, students marched from the nearby Sorbonne and occupied the theatre as "a symbol of bourgeois and Gaullist culture." ... Although the student throng invited the dancers to perform for them (but for no fee!), the co. was dispirited by the whole situation ... [and] left for Stockholm.... A ballet perf. triggered a small but heated political incident, June 6, when Maurice Bejart's Ballet du XXieme Siecle of Brussels gave a perf. of the Berlioz "Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet star-crossed lovers die as teenagers. [Br. Lit.: Romeo and Juliet] See : Death, Premature Romeo and Juliet archetypal star-crossed lovers. [Br. Lit. " at the Coliseum in Lisbon.... During the final curtain call Bejart [said], "I ask for a minute of silence in memory of Robert Kennedy, victim of violence and fascism." After the minute was observed, Bejart suddenly launched into a harangue beginning with "Down with all dictatorships." Presumably pre·sum·a·ble adj. That can be presumed or taken for granted; reasonable as a supposition: presumable causes of the disaster. , the denunciation included the right-wing govt. of Portugal.... The next morning, Portuguese police expelled Bejart.... AUGUST--A NYC NYC abbr. New York City NYC New York City newspaper columnist overheard George Balanchine declare at the Russian Tea Room The Russian Tea Room is a restaurant in New York City, located at 150 West 57th Street between Carnegie Hall Tower and Metropolitan Tower. History : "Nureyev could be great, but he prefers to be the Liberace of ballet." ... NOVEMBER--Some of the biggest dance news of the month comes from B'klyn where final negotiations are now underway to establish 3 major dance co's as residents of the B'klyn Academy of Music. The groups are the Merce Cunningham Dance Co., Alvin Alley American Dance Theatre, and a not yet organized ballet co. with Eliot Feld as art. dir.... 1969 JANUARY--In the Nov. issue, Dance Magazine reported that there were strong possibilities that American Ballet Theatre American Ballet Theatre, one of the foremost international dance companies of the 20th cent. It was founded in 1937 as the Mordkin Ballet and reorganized as the Ballet Theatre in 1940 under the direction of Lucia Chase and Rich Pleasant. might become the resident ballet co. for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the name by which it is known, (or, as named on the building itself, the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts but, locally called the The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. FEBRUARY--After yrs. of labor toward this goal, Houston this yr. obtains its 1st fully-professional ballet co., developed under auspices of Houston Ballet Foundation.... Art. dir. of the new Houston Ballet Co. is Nina Popova.... MARCH--The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is a modern dance company based in New York, New York. It was founded in 1958 by choreographer and dancer Alvin Ailey. It is made up of 30 dancers as well as artistic director Judith Jamison and associate artistic director Masazumi Chaya. had a shouting success in the Auditorium on Feb. 11. The audience did the shouting--"Bravo!" Dudley Williams won a personal accolade as did Judith Jamison.... MAY--With his full-length "Taming of the Shrew shrew, common name for the small, insectivorous mammals of the family Soricidae, related to the moles. Shrews include the smallest mammals; the smallest shrews are under 2 in. (5.1 cm) long, excluding the tail, and the largest are about 6 in. (15 cm) long. ," John Cranko has scored another triumph.... JUNE--Suzanne Farrell, 23-yr. old ballerina of NYC Ballet and a protegee pro·té·gée n. A woman or girl whose welfare, training, or career is promoted by an influential person. The 2 dancers charged that since their marriage Feb. 21 Mejia's roles had been drastically curtailed.... NOVEMBER--Milwaukee-born dancer-choreographer John Neumeier ... this fall has taken over from Todd Bolender as artistic director of the Frankfurt Opera Ballet.... 1970 JUNE--Aleksandr I. Pushkin, 62, a leading Soviet ballet dancer and teacher died in Leningrad, March 20 of a heart attack.... Some of his other students were Mikhail Barishnikov, unknown in the West, but regarded as the finest male stylist ever developed in the Leningrad Ballet.... AUGUST--May 1970 saw Balanchine's second Firebird.... Now the Firebird was created by a 17-year-old dancer, Gelsey Kirkland, product of Balanchine's School of American Ballet The School of American Ballet is located in New York City, in Lincoln Center. It is considered one of the most prestigious and notable ballet schools in the United States and teaches some of the most talented young dancers in the country. .... OCTOBER--Natalya Makarova, a leading ballerina of the Leningrad Kirov Ballet, sought and obtained political asylum in London on Sept. 4.... NOVEMBER--Ex-NYC Ballet principal dancer Suzanne Farrell has joined Maurice Bejart's Ballet of the 20th Century....
