NEWS LITE : SURVIVOR OF DIANA CRASH TALKS TO MEDIA.

Nearly one year after the car crash that killed Princess Diana Noun 1. Princess Diana - English aristocrat who was the first wife of Prince Charles; her death in an automobile accident in Paris produced intense national mourning (1961-1997)

and two others, the sole survivor appealed for privacy for himself, his family and the families of the dead.

Trevor Rees-Jones, who spoke in a taped statement released Monday in London, asked reporters ``to let us mark this tragic anniversary in our own way.''

He said he would have no further comment until the judicial inquiry into the Aug. 31 Paris crash concludes.

Also killed were driver Henri Paul, who was legally drunk, and Diana's boyfriend Dodi Fayed, son of Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed.

Rees-Jones, who has told investigators he remembers very little about the crucial moments before the crash, was employed by Al Fayed as a bodyguard at the time.

``I've cooperated fully with the judge who's investigating the accident and told him all I know up to this present time,'' Rees-Jones said in his statement.

Rees-Jones' lawyer, Ian Lucas, said that Rees-Jones had made the statement - his first televised statement about the crash - because he has been inundated in·un·date

Actor's father seeks new trial

The father of actor Woody Harrelson on Monday sought to win a new trial for the killing of a federal judge nearly 20 years ago.

Defense attorneys say Charles Harrelson, 59, was the victim of bad legal advice and prosecutorial misconduct. He is serving two life sentences for the contract slaying of U.S. District Judge John H. Wood Jr. outside his San Antonio home in 1979.

Based on his prehearing affidavit, Harrelson argues - as he has all along - that he was 270 miles away in Dallas when Wood received a fatal rifle shot to the back.

Jack Compton, a former Customs Service agent who worked on the case, testified Monday in Denver that he believed Harrelson was the hit man who killed Wood.

During Compton's testimony, Harrelson's three sons, including the actor, listened from a front row in the spectators' section just behind their father's table.

After the hearing, Woody Harrelson acknowledged he was paying his father's legal bills but he declined to discuss the case in detail.

Reynolds won't go down with casino

In the reel world, Debbie Reynolds survived the sinking of the Titanic in ``The Unsinkable Molly Brown.''

In the real world, the Las Vegas hotel she labored to keep alive the past five years will go on the auction block Wednesday.

``I feel like I'm in a barrel at the top of Niagara Falls,'' she said Sunday. ``I know I'm going over. I just don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)
