NEWS LITE : SUMMIT OF CAREER; NINTH EVEREST TRIP WINS HIGHEST HONOR.

Sherpas renowned for their bravery and endurance as mountain climbers honored one their most talented Friday for his ninth ascent of the world's highest peak.

Appa Sherpa Apa, often erroneously referred to as Apa Sherpa or Lhakpa Tenzing Sherpa, is a Nepali sherpa. He was born between 1960 - 1962, in the village of Thame, Nepal. Apa himself is not sure, as Sherpas do not take strict records of birth dates. , 38, first climbed Mount Everest in 1989 with a New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia. Last week, Appa led 20 climbers to the summit of the 29,028-foot peak, capping his ninth Everest trek.

``Every time I leave home for the mountain, I fear for my life. I get scared,'' Appa said in Katmandu, Nepal. ``But I know the mountain gods will take care of me.''

On Friday, the Trekking Association of Nepal awarded Appa this year's Everest International Award. The presentation is made every year on Everest Day, the anniversary of the first ascent In climbing, a first ascent (FA) is the first modern recorded climb to reach the top of a mountain, or the first to follow a particular climbing route. Before he became a professional mountain guide, Appa and his family depended on potato farming in the foothills of the Himalayas. He dropped out of school in the third grade, not uncommon in Nepal, where young children often abort (1) To exit a function or application without saving any data that has been changed.

Appa is now flirting with the record books. He is just one climb away from matching the climbing total set by his hero and neighbor, Ang Rita Sherpa, two years ago.

Sherpas were mostly yak herders and traders living high in the Himalayas until Nepal opened its borders to tourism in 1950. Their stamina and knowledge of the mountains made them expert guides and porters for foreign mountaineers. Appa gets about $1,400 a climb.

The rash of deaths on Everest in 1996 sent a chill through the climbing community and demonstrated to the uninitiated just how quickly danger can turn to the tragedy on the world's highest mountain.

No climbers have lost their lives on the Nepalese side of Everest this season, although an American couple died scaling Everest from the Chinese side on May 23.
