NEWS LITE : SUITED TO BE BATMAN?

Word is, the set of the new Batman flick is positively aglow with good vibes. New Bat George Clooney is being given credit. Working with Val Kilmer, Batman in the last installment of the hit film, was a nightmare, director Joel Schumacher tells Entertainment Weekly. But ``Clooney has a sense of humor Noun 1. sense of humor - the trait of appreciating (and being able to express) the humorous; "she didn't appreciate my humor"; "you can't survive in the army without a sense of humor"

And since he's dissing Kilmer, what about Kilmer's co-stars Tommy Lee Jones For the musician, see .

No release for Prince In a most uncommon appearance, The Artist Formerly Known as Prince belted out a tune from his new CD, ``Chaos and Disorder,'' outside the studio of NBC's ``Today'' show on New York's Rockefeller Plaza Tuesday morn. It's no coincidence that the CD hits music stores today. TAFKAP TAFKAP The Artist Formerly Known As Prince  was still wearing graffiti, ``Slave,'' on his cheek because of his war with Warner Bros. He wants to be free, see, of his contract. But he has to deliver a certain amount of records to get out. The last song on this CD is the one-minute, 26-second, dismissive and minimalist ``Had U,'' that says in part: ``Missed you/called you/found you/begged you/convinced you/saw you/held you/kissed you . . . ''

You can guess where the song's leading.

It's chilly at the top

Say you are Sandy Hill Pittman, socialite and mountain climber, and you're halfway up Mount Everest when a blizzard strikes, but your pricey hide gets saved when two guides half-drag, half-carry you back to camp. Say you're all thawed out and being interviewed for Vanity Fair when the reporter asks you about the two fellows who saved your life. Your response? ``Which two gentlemen is that?'' Cold

Taking life one step at a time Remember Michael Hebranko, the New York man who was so big that rescue workers had to knock out to force out by a blow or by blows; as, to knock out the brains s>.

Well, after two months in St. Luke's Hospital, Hebranko's dropped 250 pounds (that's the equivalent of two supermodels and a bunch of Quarter Pounders), and is ready to go home. The one-time spokesman for Richard Simmons' Deal-A-Meal, before he ballooned to somewhere between 800 and 1,000 pounds, says that he's walking again, for the first time in a year.

Hebranko's first challenge, says Simmons, is to walk through his house's front door. ``He has to climb three steps to get there. For us, that's nothing, but that's all he's thinking about right now.''

But the ``Microcosmic Orgasm?''

So declared New York Councilwoman Mary Pinkett, who inadvertently coined the lascivious label at a City Hall ceremony.

Mayor Rudolph Giuliani was signing several bills when he asked her to say a few words about one she sponsored that consolidates two agencies.

``I think so often people refer to New York City as if it were some - microcosmic orgasm,'' Pinkett began.

She corrected herself quickly: ``Or organism, rather.''

The audience broke up in laughter, and the mayor grinned.

``It's life,'' the embarrassed councilwoman said later. ``It's funny. Everybody in the room knew what I was talking about.''

Waterston to Cambodia

Sam Waterston is heading to Cambodia to urge a solution to a dangerous souvenir of the Khmer Rouge: unremoved land mines.

Waterston, who starred in the 1984 film ``The Killing Fields,'' will join a delegation from the private organization Refugees International from Thursday to July 16. He'll help press for accelerated mine removal in Cambodia.
