The Original Pantry gets name change

Anyone who has heard a speech by Mayor Richard Riordan since his election in 1993 knows that he and the English language have only a casual acquaintance.

But who would have thought his foot in the mouth would extend to his staff and the letters sent out on his behalf?

An invitation was sent out Wednesday for City Council members to attend the 75th anniversary celebration later this month at the mayor's downtown landmark restaurant, The Original Pantry. Unfortunately, it ended up typed as ``The Original Panty.''

Hopper sells ex-temple in Wilmington, N.C.

Actor Dennis Hopper has sold a 100-year-old former Masonic temple in Wilmington, N.C., but will keep an apartment he built in the downtown building.

John Sutton, a developer from Ocean Isle Beach, bought the building and said he plans to put a restaurant and another business on the ground floor, with offices on the second floor and apartments above that.

An old theater on the top floor will be renovated and will be available to rent for plays, film screenings and other uses.

Sutton said he plans to invest several million dollars by the time he's through with the project. Work on the renovation is already under way.

The property is valued at $460,000, according to county tax records. Hopper bought the building for $150,000 in 1992, records show.

The building has been vacant since Buy-Rite Discount Store moved out in 1989.

Hopper made substantial repairs to the exterior of the building, which has a facade of ornate stonework stonework, term applied to various types of work—that of the lapidary who shapes, cuts, and polishes gemstones or engraves them for seals and ornaments; of the jeweler or artisan who mounts or encrusts them in gold, silver, or other metal; of the stonemason who . The actor had hoped to establish a performing arts academy in the building. But a plan to get state funding for the project fell through in 1994 amid squabbling over the charter of the academy.

Hopper first came to Wilmington in 1985 to film ``Blue Velvet.''
