NEWS LITE : SEINFELD'S NEIGHBORS LIVE, HE SAYS.

Don't go trashing Jerry Seinfeld's neighborhood.

He was forced to defend Manhattan's Upper West Side - where he lives and where his TV show was set - after The New York New York, state, United States

New York trades manners for time

The city that invented the New York minute is apparently in too much of a hurry to say ``Please.''

In an attempt to speed up subway service, conductors have been ordered to stop saying ``Please'' when addressing riders over the speaker system.

That means dropping the word from the phrase ``Stand clear of the closing doors.''

``If you add five seconds at every stop by saying `please' at the end of 60 stops, you're four or five minutes off schedule,'' Al O'Leary, a spokesman for the New York City New York City: see New York, city.

Authors offer dogs as model workers

Matt Weinstein and Luke Barber's new book, ``Work Like Your Dog'' (Villard; $22.95) espouses consideration of dogs as role models.

A dog chasing a bone, for example, doesn't let a setback or failure ruin its day. Dogs ``approach their work with not only dedication, loyalty, discipline, sensitivity and love, but also with joy, enthusiasm and happiness.''

Stern visits German musical landmarks

Violinist Isaac Stern arrived in Germany on Monday for the first time since he was there as a U.S. soldier a half-century ago.

The 78-year-old virtuoso will not be performing - he left his violin at home in New York - but will give master classes to young musicians in Cologne.

``I have a responsibility to pass on to the next generation what I learned from my teachers,'' he said. ``It keeps me young and reminds me where I came from. Teaching young artists is like giving water to a flower.''

Stern said he and his wife will visit the German cities where Beethoven, Bach and Mendelssohn lived and worked. He called Germany a ``country of music'' and said it is time to return to hear and see for himself what young German musicians are drawing from their heritage.

Stern was born in Russia but moved to the United States with his parents when he was a baby and is an American citizen.

Mandela's ex-wife sues to gain house

The small house where President Nelson Mandela and his wife lived in the early '60s is at the center of a court battle.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is taking her former husband and the Soweto Heritage Trust to court over ownership of the Soweto, South Africa, house.

Seven years after he was freed from prison in 1990, Mandela purchased the house and gave it to the trust, said Ismail Ayob, Mandela's lawyer.

But Madikizela-Mandela, who was divorced from Mandela in 1996, has said the house is hers.
