Fans of the gritty TV crime drama weren't the only ones surprised by the casting of Schroder, 28, to replace Jimmy Smits.

``I feel like I won the lottery,'' Schroder said.

A native New Yorker, Schroder first appeared in a TV commercial at age 3 months. Despite obvious benefits, stardom is no picnic for a child, Schroder said.

Days after newspapers reported that Posh Spice Victoria Adams is pregnant, the News of the World on Sunday announced that a second member of the hit band The Spice Girls is expecting.

``I'm not saying yes and I'm not saying no,'' the tabloid quoted Scary Spice Melanie Brown as saying. Breathlessly, the paper recorded her father's response when its reporters asked him for comment: ``How did you find out? You're the first.''

The News of the World said 23-year-old Brown ``and her delighted fiance,'' dancer Jimmy Gulzar, plan to marry as soon as the group finishes its U.S. tour.

Adams, 24, and her fiance, Manchester United soccer star David Beckham, have not commented on reports she is pregnant. They plan to marry next year.

Affair better if lovers share

expectations

Luanne Linquist's ``Secret Lovers, Affairs Happen . . . How to Cope'' (Jossey-Bass; $17.95 paper) is packed with useful and comforting information:

The secrets of having a successful affair include clarifying expectations, communicating well and ``being effectively discreet or being open, if this is possible. Lovers emphasize the importance of being careful not to be discovered, yet feeling comfortable with the secrecy.''

``Lovers point out the importance of finding a balance between the affair and the other activities in the lovers' lives.''

``Enjoy the affair for what it is in the moment, and don't take it too seriously.''

Finally, ``Affairs end for numerous reasons,'' Linquist, a psychologist, says in the book. ``The secrecy surrounding the affair may become a major source of conflict.

 Stern hits dull

patch on CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast.

One thing most people wouldn't call Howard Stern is dull . . . until Saturday night that is.

Stern debuted his weekly ``The Howard Stern Radio Show'' on KCBS-TV (Channel 2) Saturday night at 11:30. Well before midnight, the program became boring. It is nearly identical to his show on E! Entertainment Television, which is nearly identical to his radio show, which airs on KLSX-FM (97.1).

The only difference between E! and CBS is a little slicker editing.

Stern gets more mileage out of his four-plus hours of morning radio than Michelin gets out of its top-grade tire. Saturday night's was a freak show.

Stern is capable of much better. There were no celebrity sightings even though some of Hollywood's top talent, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Wesley Snipes Snipes (Diminutive for Snipers) is a text-mode networked computer game that was created in 1983 by SuperSet software. Snipes is officially credited as being the original inspiration for Novell NetWare.  and Heather Locklear, often share his air.

What Stern has done is devised yet another way to spread his brand and make more money without doing any extra work.

The only people who seem to be working overtime are the censors. Words were bleeped and two different methods of covering naked body parts were employed.

His material is getting diluted because of its overexposure overexposure
