NEWS LITE : LETTERS SEALED WITH KISSES RECEIVED 41 YEARS LATE.

Doris Spencer was a spirited girl on the verge On the Verge (or The Geography of Yearning) is a play written by Eric Overmyer. It makes extensive use of esoteric language and pop culture references from the late nineteenth century to 1955.  of womanhood when Jim Irwin fell in love with her.

She had been a handful for the nuns who cared for her. But her rebellious bent and charm had captured Jim's heart. The young suitor SUITOR. One who is a party to a suit or action in court. But the tell-tale X's - ``kiss marks'' - on the small brown envelopes caught the attention of the nuns long before Doris ever saw them.

Now a widow of 58, she finds herself unable to remember that rash boy.

``They still had the X's written over the seal by this boy Jim,'' she said Sunday. ``I burst into tears when I read them. I had no idea anyone thought so much of me to be as persistent at this Jim Irwin was.''

Doris, who changed her name to Tehillah Duligall to forget her early life in abusive foster homes, has grown children who recently wrote to the society that had cared for their mother and requested her file. It responded by sending a package that included the letters.

``Dear Doris, I am writing to let you know I came to Egham (the nearest railway station) last Tuesday Last Tuesday is a Christian melodic punk rock band hailing from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He promised to come by again ``with or without their permission.''

``P.S.,'' he added. ``If you get short of cigarettes or money, write and let me know because I will always send you some.''

Duligall tried to trace Irwin through the return address on the envelopes, but has had no luck.

Royal blood flowing in Clinton and Dole

President Clinton and Bob Dole have more in common than wanting to be president. They are distant cousins Distant Cousins were an English band from Manchester. Some journalists grouped them with the Madchester scene, though the music was a blend of soul and pop. The band's singer was Doreen Edwards. Former member of The Smirks Neil Fitzpatrick played guitar. .

, publishing director of Burke's Peerage, says Clinton's bluer blood gives him an edge in November's election.

``The presidential candidate with the greatest number of royal genes has always been the victor, without exception, since George Washington,'' said Brooks-Baker, an American from Baltimore who has lived in Britain since 1968.

``Only the merest drop of royal blood flows in the veins of Senator Dole,'' he said.

Dole's sole royal link is to Henry III, who ruled England from 1227 to 1272. He is related to the king on his mother's side, through the Talbott and Harrison families of Maryland and Virginia, according to Burke's.

The Dole family's history of political service dates back to the mid-1600s when the candidate's ancestor, Richard Ewen, served as a speaker of the House of Burgesses House of Burgesses

Michael Jordan, Jerry Seinfeld and Mel Gibson play different venues, but they're scoring kudos in the same arena.

They made GQ's ``Men of the Year'' list, published in the November issue.

``We catch ourselves humming his melodies on the subway, mentally replaying his fourth quarter, dreaming about the characters he's conjured with his pen,'' the magazine said by way of a composite introduction.

``Only then do we realize that his name . . . is no longer just a proper noun. It's a symbol now.''

Readers chose the winners in 11 categories, including sports, topped by Jordan. Seinfeld won for TV entertainment, Gibson for film.

Imus: Tasteless comments about first couple paid off

Radio talk show host Don Imus said his March appearance at the Radio and Television Correspondents Association dinner, much criticized for vulgarity and jokes at the president and first lady's expense, was ``the best thing that ever happened to me.'' Imus told the TV magazine Satellite Direct that the number of stations carrying his show went from 50 to 90 in the aftermath. ``Imagine where I'd be today if I'd said something really nasty.''

Crow totes up costs of fame

It hasn't been all fun for Sheryl Crow, whose debut album ``Tuesday Night Music Club'' sold nearly 8 million copies.

Behind-the-scenes fighting over its production took a personal toll, the three-time Grammy winner says in the Nov. 14 issue of Rolling Stone magazine.

``It's unfortunate in some ways that the record did so well, because I lost friends over it,'' says Crow, whose hit ``All I Wanna wan·na

Some of the studio musicians griped about not getting enough credit for their work.

``It all comes from the place of how much did she do on her last record?'' Crow said. ``I just think that's something I'm going to suffer, this bruise in the apple, until three or four albums from now.''
