In an Memorial Day emergency rescue mission, Yamaha flew a new piano to John Tesh in Atlantic City. The music man had been in dire straits. The instrument he had been schlepping around on a nationwide tour had broken down, requiring several hours of intensive tuning after each concert.

A technician flown in from Los Angeles along with the new piano was able to pinpoint the cause of the trouble, which was revealed in a press release flashed around the country Thursday: ``Extensive hard playing by Tesh.''

John McDonough, 43, is a stout, bearded actor with a background in children's educational theater, a passion for bow ties and a resemblance to a young Kris Kringle.

``If I'm the captain of anything, I'm the captain of the Treasure House,'' McDonough said Thursday, pointing at the colorful set where the show will be filmed.

McDonough, of Hartford, Conn., was chosen over 1,000 candidates to star in a revival of the popular kids show that aired for nearly 40 years before signing off in 1993.

``In the end, it was a gut feeling gut feeling Intuition, visceral sensation . John clearly shone. He is magical,'' said Barry Stagg, spokesman for Saban Entertainment.

The new show is scheduled for 26 half-hour episodes, starting sometime in September. It will be filmed in Tampa, Fla.

Longtime Captain Kangaroo Bob Keeshan isn't involved. In March, Keeshan said through a spokeswoman he would not be associated with a show that uses his name but doesn't allow him artistic control.

 fitness; Brooklyn teen wins

spelling bee

Convinced she would win the National Spelling Bee, 13-year-old Rebecca Sealfon shouted each letter into the microphone - ``e-u-o-n-y-m'' - and raised her arms high.

``Yeah!'' she screamed Thursday before balancing the trophy cup atop her head. The home-schooled teen-ager from Brooklyn, N.Y., placed eighth in the Scripps Howard-sponsored contest last year, but this year she was the champ, beating out Prem Murthy Trivedi, 11, of Howell, N.J.

``I knew I could figure it out,'' Rebecca said about ``euonym,'' defined as an appropriate name for a person, place or thing.

Nerves began to fray during the second and last day of competition, which began Wednesday with 245 spellers. The champ receives $5,000 and other prizes, including a laptop computer - which does not come equipped with spell-checking software.

As the competition wore on, the words got harder.

Brian Dunne, 14, of Toledo, Ohio, pulled off the word ``spheterize,'' which means to take for one's own.

``I've never heard it before,'' Brian admitted later.

Cartoonist quits job

at Voice

Village Voice cartoonist Jules Feiffer, known for his spidery drawings of angst-ridden New Yorkers, quit after his editor said he didn't want to pay him anymore.

``It's not that I've slipped,'' said Feiffer, 68, a 40-year fixture at the alternative weekly newspaper. ``It's that I'm too expensive.''

The Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist, who was making $75,000 a year, was told by Editor in Chief Donald H. Forst that the paper wanted to stop paying him, but still run his syndicated cartoons by paying Universal Press Syndicate Universal Press Syndicate, an Andrews McMeel Universal company, is the world's largest independent syndicate and provides syndication for a number of lifestyle and opinion columns, comics, and various other content.  $200 a week.

``Forst said, in what turns out to be an understatement, `I have good news and bad news for you,' '' Feiffer said Thursday. ``The bad news was they wanted to get rid of me. The good news was they still wanted to run me.''

The cartoonist also rejected a counterproposal coun·ter·pro·pos·al

He said his cartoons would no longer appear in the Voice after this week and he would not allow the paper to pick up his work from syndication.

Forst said his decision on Feiffer was a logical one.
