NEWS LITE : KNOWING THE LAY OF THE LAND GEOGRAPHY WHIZ WINS $25,000 SCHOLARSHIP.

Two-time National Geography Bee finalist Alex Kerchner, 12, of Kirkland, Wash., hid his nervousness, but underneath he was boiling over.

``I figure you have to be pretty relaxed today,'' quizmaster Alex Trebek George Alexander Trebek (born as Giorgi Suka-Alex Trebek [1] on July 22, 1940) is an Emmy Award-winning Canadian-American television personality and game show host, best known as the host of the game show Jeopardy! since September 10, 1984.  of ``Jeopardy!'' fame told Alex on Wednesday in Washington, D.C.

``No, not really,'' Alex said.

But it didn't stop him.

Alex sailed on to win the bee, beating out nine other finalists, 56 other national contestants and 5 million other students across the country who vied for the $25,000 college scholarship.

``I think I was confident all the way through,'' Alex said afterward, as he was mobbed by reporters and agents from the ``Today'' show and ``CNN CNN

One of the seven-graders most challenging questions had to do with wind. Trebek had to repeat the question. The silence in the auditorium seemed eternal.

``The eolian e·o·li·an also ae·o·li·an

Alex's father, David Kerchner, scratched his head.

``Wind,'' the boy guessed.

``Correct,'' Trebek said.

Alex smiled.
