NEWS LITE : JAPANESE `VIRTUAL PET' EARNS WINGS OFFBEAT.

In the new version of this computer game that simulates the life cycle of a pet, the tiny virtual pet comes back to life as a winged cherub cherub (chĕr`əb), plural

for Hakuhinkan Toy Park, which expected to distribute its allotment of 1,000 Angel Tamagotchis in just a few hours.

Officials of Bandai said they created the new ``virtual angel'' that does not die after education officials in South Korea, Singapore, China and the Philippines complained that the pets took up too much of students' time or, in the words of one Filipino official, ``awaken in children an early sense of death, which is not good.'' Both Hong Kong and South Korea have prohibited children from taking their Tamagotchis to school.

But if pet resurrection was in the mind of the toy maker, a keen sense of novelty seemed to be the only motive burning in the heart of Tamagotchi fans who sat in line Sunday to be the first with the latest version of the toy.

``I just want the new one as soon as possible,'' said Tomomi Otsu, 29, of suburban Chiba.

``It's like Disney meets S&M,'' said comedian Joan Rivers, who loves the place, La Nouvelle Justine, in the city's Chelsea neighborhood. ``Our busboy didn't bring the bread fast enough, so the maitre d' spanked him.''

``The only thing that worries me,'' said Rivers, ``is that some of my friends really got into it.''

On weekends, La Nouvelle Justine, named for a Marquis de Sade Noun 1. Marquis de Sade - French soldier and writer whose descriptions of sexual perversion gave rise to the term `sadism' (1740-1814)

One Friday night, diners at New York's only S&M restaurant included traveling businessmen and two Wall Street bachelorette parties, as well as the staff of Mistress Mine, a magazine for dominatrixes and the men who worship them.

Between courses, a 30-year-old secretary ordered spankings from the $20 ``Special Fare'' menu for both her brother and her boyfriend.

``It was totally worthwhile - there's nothing like seeing your loved ones get put in their proper place,'' Tina Block said. ``I'd also like to get one for my mother, but I don't think she'd be into it. Then again, she did it to me.''

The restaurant, which opened three months ago, is so crowded that dinner is by reservation only. Dinner and wine run about $50 per person, no beatings included.

Gifford's exposed woman to bare all

The woman whose tryst with sportscaster Frank Gifford gave the supermarket tabloids a springtime scandal is baring it all in Playboy magazine.

The nude photo shoot of former flight attendant Suzen Johnson, 47, was completed two weeks ago.

Johnson will be on the November cover of Playboy and in an inside pictorial will ``discuss her relationship with Frank,'' said Playboy spokeswoman Elizabeth Norris.

The affair was exposed by the Globe tabloid, which ran surveillance photos of Gifford and Johnson.

Gifford and Kathie Lee Gifford have been married since 1986. They have two children.
