NEWS LITE : JAGGER-HALL NUPTIALS IN BALI NULL AND VOID, AGENCY SAYS.

Mick Jagger's publicity agency has come up with a novel argument to contest Jerry Hall's divorce petition: The couple was never legally married.

Lawyers for Hall, 42, said Friday that she has begun proceedings to end the tumultuous eight-year marriage to the Rolling Stones Rolling Stones, English rock music group that rose to prominence in the mid-1960s and continues to exert great influence. Members have included singer

Mick Jagger (Michael Phillip Jagger), 1943–; guitarists

Although the statement from LD Publicity gave no further details on the claim, Britain's national news agency, Press Association, said it related to allegations Jagger jag 1

Lawyers for the 55-year-old Jagger are expected to argue that the religious part of the marriage ceremony was completed but not the civil part, and that consequently the marriage is not legally recognized in Indonesia and so cannot be recognized in Britain, Press Association reported.

Though their wedding took place in 1990, Jagger and Hall have been together for 21 years and have four children: Elizabeth, 14, James, 13, Georgia May, 6, and Gabriel, 1.

Hall's divorce proceedings followed newspaper reports about a 29-year-old Brazilian model, Luciana Giminez Mora MORA, In civil law. He always wore blue suede shoes in concert, he said, and fans would always line up afterward to step on his shoes. ``You can't believe how much of a problem that becomes. My feet get horribly sore, my toenails not only bruise but they crack, and I get infected toenails all the time. I've seen my fans get older, which means they put on weight, so every year, it seems my feet get crushed more.

``I try to alternate left and right so they both get an equal bruising. . . . Sawyer, Gibson try to pep up a.m. gab

How will viewers receive Charlie, back from retirement as ``Good Morning America'' host?

Will morning become Diane?

Such were the questions facing these SWAT team co-anchors Monday morning, their first ``GMA'' appearance since being summoned to keep ABC's wakeup show afloat.

They signed on with all due camaraderie:

``Hi, I'm Diane Sawyer from Louisville, Ky. - the new kid on the block.''

``And I'm Charles Gibson, originally from Evanston, Ill. I hope you remember the old kid on the block.''

Of course, Sawyer isn't really a new kid on this turf: She had the same job at CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast.  in the early 1980s. Now, after rising to prime-time stardom, she, like Gibson, is playing the good soldier by returning to the morning-show trenches.

``So how was it, old kid, getting up in the morning?'' Sawyer asked Gibson shortly after 7 a.m. EST EST electroshock therapy.

``That alarm clock was a familiar sound this morning,'' he replied. ``I didn't actually throw a pillow at it, but I strongly considered it.''

``Same at my house,'' Sawyer said. ``I got up all right, but it was not pretty, let me tell you that.''

Then, at the end of the broadcast, Sawyer faced Gibson.

``I have a comment to you before we go,'' she said, whereupon she pretended to collapse.

After much laughter, Gibson gently reminded her: ``We have another show tomorrow.''

DiCaprio vows to protect environment

Leonardo DiCaprio promised Monday not to mess up a Thailand beach.

The actor's pledge came in response to environmentalists who say the sets being constructed on Phi Phi Le for the film star's latest movie, ``The Beach,'' are harming the island national park in the Andaman Sea.

The environmentalists are worried about the planting of non-native coconut trees and the smoothing over of sand dunes on Maya Beach, and have tried to get the courts to halt the shooting.

``Preservation of the environment has always been of utmost concern to me, and I would never be part of any project that did anything to harm nature,'' DiCaprio said in a statement.
