Singer Braxton sues to get out of contract

Looks like Toni Braxton doesn't want to sing another love song for LaFace Records, the label that made her a superstar. Entertainment Weekly says the sultry singer has slapped Arista Records, LaFace's parent company, with a lawsuit to get out of her contract. She claims the pact she signed violates California's seven-year rule, which bans companies from hiring new talent and monopolizing them indefinitely. Braxton basically wants to breathe again to take breath; to feel a sense of relief, as from danger, responsibility, or press of business.

Astronaut's holidays to be Mir-y

Feeling sorry for yourself because you're far from home this holiday season? Think of David Wolf, up on Mir.

``We'll enjoy the light show on the Earth instead of our own Christmas light,'' Wolf said Friday from the Russian space station. ``Actually, our consoles here look a lot like Christmas lights a lot of the time.''

Wolf, who is Jewish, received a menorah menorah

as a Hanukkah gift from his sister. The menorah and gelt, holiday candy in the shape of coins, were delivered by a Russian supply ship in October.

After nearly three months in space, the 41-year-old doctor and engineer said he's feeling extremely good but craves ``those sweet potatoes with the marshmallows on top that my mom makes.''

He said he'd also like a good pizza.

Anti-mine activist's gift dog will go to work for the cause

Nobel Peace Prize The Nobel Peace Prize (Swedish and Norwegian: Nobels fredspris) is the name of one of five Nobel Prizes bequeathed by the Swedish industrialist and inventor Alfred Nobel.  winner Jody Williams loves dogs, but she gave away a handsome German shepherd she received as a gift.

The dog had been trained in mine detecting.

``I wish I could take him home with me, but that would be a waste of his training,'' said Williams, an anti-land mine activist.

She turned the 2-1/2-year-old dog over to Norwegian People's Aid, one of the world's leading de-mining organizations.

Given by the Swedish foundation Humanity Dog, the mainly-black German shepherd will be sent to Angola to help clear minefields. Trained dogs can substantially speed up mine-clearing operations because they can detect explosives even in plastic anti-personnel mines.

At home in Putney, Vt., Williams is known for frolicking with her white German shepherd, Stella.

Clinton pal says it's worth price to sit on Lincoln's bed

Haven't slept in the Lincoln Bedroom at the White House yet? What're you waiting for? Clinton isn't president for life, you know. A sleepover is highly recommended by Rick Kaplan, new president of CNN CNN

and a longtime Clinton pal. Kaplan was working at ABC News when he spent his night in the White House in 1993, and he's still raving about it. ``Let me tell you, it's marvelous,'' Kaplan said to Vanity Fair magazine. ``You just sit there. You don't really sleep very much because you're staring at everything. You know, on the table is the Gettysburg Address. . . . I will be pilloried for this. But if you ever have a chance to sleep in the bedroom, do it.''
