While she was a student at the College of William and Mary Noun 1. William and Mary - joint monarchs of England; William III and Mary II , in Williamsburg, Va., in the early 1970s, Close owned a small white dog named Penny, recalls theater professor Jerry Bledsoe.

One day while she was appearing in a student production of ``The Miser,'' Penny got out of Close's dressing room and wandered into the theater.

``The dog slowly made its way down the aisle and climbed onstage,'' Bledsoe recalled.

Penny appeared just as Close was just delivering the line, ``The devil sees you and takes you to hell, you beggardly dog.''

Instead of applauding, the audience laughed so hard the play had to stop.

``It makes so many people happy,'' Gabor said. ``It makes me feel good. I try to cheer them up, that's all. It's a small thing really, darling. But I know it means so much to them.''

Hanns Leske, a Schoeneberg politician who champions the renaming plan, said the complaints were ``mostly from older citizens who still have a very concrete image of Dietrich'' - namely, of her in a U.S. Army uniform, entertaining American troops during the war.

Hardly a glamorous address, the narrow street, now called Tempelhofer Weg, runs a few blocks through a light industrial area near Tempelhof airport. It boasts a school, a metal scrap yard, two car repair shops, a Tupperware distributor and about 20 other enterprises.
