NEWS LITE : DOLE VEXES GROUP IN IMPOTENCE AD.

Bob Dole's current TV ad urging men to seek treatment for erectile dysfunction Erectile Dysfunction Definition

Erectile dysfunction (ED), formerly known as impotence, is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection long enough to engage in sexual intercourse.
has prompted a protest from a conservative Christian leader who wants Dole to drop the word ``partners'' and use ``spouses'' instead.

In the ad, a folksy folk·sy

Prostate cancer is the leading malignancy in men in the United States and is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in men.  and his post-operative concern over impotence. ``You know, it's a little embarrassing to talk about ED (erectile dysfunction), but it's so important to millions of men and their partners that I decided to talk about it publicly,'' Dole says.

The Rev. Louis Sheldon, chairman of the Traditional Values Coalition The Traditional Values Coalition is a Christian Right organization that claims to represent over 43,000 conservative Christian churches throughout the United States of America. Headquartered in Washington, D.C. , sent Dole a letter Wednesday that carefully avoided blaming the 1996 Republican presidential nominee In United States politics and government, the phrase presidential nominee has two distinct meanings.

Sheldon instead blamed a ``politically correct politically correct Politically sensitive adjective Referring to language reflecting awareness and sensitivity to another person's physical, mental, cultural, or other disadvantages or deviations from a norm; a person is not mentally retarded, but  copywriter at the pharmaceutical company'' sponsoring the ad. The New York-based pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc., manufacturer of the popular drug Viagra, is underwriting the ad. However, Dole does not offer a direct endorsement of Viagra.

``The use of the word `partner' is problematic,'' Sheldon wrote in a letter to Dole. ``It is inconsistent with the common sense, traditional values Traditional values refer to those beliefs, moral codes, and mores that are passed down from generation to generation within a culture, subculture or community. Pub recipient sees business brewing

Trevor O'Driscoll, who 10 months ago whipped 65,000 pretenders in the Guinness ``Win Your Own Pub in Ireland'' competition, appears to be making a go of it running Finucane's pub despite a glut of rivals in the County Kerry “Kerry” redirects here. For other uses, see Kerry (disambiguation).

McConaughey gets flak over comment

An Asian-American group condemned Matthew McConaughey for using a racial slur on Rosie O'Donnell's show.

McConaughey, who is filming the World War II movie ``U-571'' in Italy, made the comment Tuesday when O'Donnell referred to his short hair.

``I take it you're doing a movie. That's the new hairdo?'' she asked.

``Yeah,'' McConaughey answered. ``I'm over in Rome fighting Germans and Japs from World War II.''

There was no audible reaction from the studio audience and O'Donnell continued the conversation without pause.

``The term `Jap' has historically been used to dehumanize de·hu·man·ize

McConaughey publicist Jennifer Allen and Laura Mandel, a spokeswoman for O'Donnell's show, said Thursday that the actor meant no offense.

``He's the nicest young man there is,'' Allen said.

``Have you screwed anything up yet?'' David Letterman asked Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura on Letterman's show Tuesday night.

``Not intentionally,'' Ventura replied.

Well, now he has, and it happened on the Letterman show, when the former pro wrestler joked that St. Paul's confusing streets might have been designed by drunken Irishmen.

On Thursday, the governor apologized, saying he was only trying to be funny. But then he also said he is sorry that Minnesotans have apparently lost their sense of humor Noun 1. sense of humor - the trait of appreciating (and being able to express) the humorous; "she didn't appreciate my humor"; "you can't survive in the army without a sense of humor"

``If I offended anyone, I apologize,'' he said. ``The David Letterman show is a show of comedy. It's a show that has Top 10 lists and is generally considered comedic and that's the light in which I did the show.''

The governor pledged to play it straight on any future late-night show appearances.

The crack about the Irish didn't play well back at home.

``He may see humor in it, but as an Irish person, it's offensive,'' said Dermot O'Mara, owner of Irish on Grand, a St. Paul gift shop.

Cronenberg to head '99's Cannes jury

David Cronenberg, whose movie ``Crash'' prompted both boos and raves at the Cannes film festival Cannes Film Festival

and thrilling, and I can't wait,'' the Canadian director said in a statement.

Cronenberg, who also directed ``The Fly'' and ``Dead Ringers,'' won the 1996 Grand Jury prize at Cannes for ``Crash,'' which stunned many with its scenes of lovers getting their kicks from car crashes. Despite the award, there were boos and walkouts, too.

``With David Cronenberg, the `angelic shadow of the bizarre' will without a doubt loom over the Croisette (boardwalk),'' said Gilles Jacob, director of the festival.

Last year's jury president was American director Martin Scorsese.
