Cartoon doctor

in trouble; Prescribe 2 aspirin,

they'll call in morning

Dr. Rex Morgan usually appears in black and white. These days, he's a chagrined red.

When the cartoon physician prescribed aspirin for an infant's cold Saturday, he outraged doctors and nurses from coast to coast for possibly exposing the baby to the rare and sometimes fatal Reyes Syndrome.

A malpractice suit against Morgan might not be worth the paper it's written on, but King Features Syndicate King Features Syndicate, a print syndication company owned by The Hearst Corporation, distributes about 150 comic strips, newspaper columns, editorial cartoons, puzzles and games to nearly 5000 newspapers around the world. King Features Syndicate is a unit of Hearst Holdings, Inc.  isn't taking any chances.

``I apologize to our loyal readers and family of newspaper clients for any errors in Rex's medical judgment,'' Woody Wilson, who writes the comic strip, said in a statement Monday. ``We try to make `Rex Morgan, MD' the best and most accurate comic strip of its kind in syndication today.''

The strip sparked dozens of letters from concerned physicians, nurses and parents who questioned Morgan's treatment plan.

Aspirin has been linked to Reyes Syndrome, a rare disease that attacks mostly children and young people who have suffered viral illnesses such as influenza and chicken pox chicken pox or varicella (vâr'əsĕl`ə), infectious disease usually occurring in childhood. It is believed to be caused by the same herpesvirus that produces shingles. .

King, which owns the right to Rex Morgan, urged readers of the nationally published strip to take the doctor's remedies in the context of the cartoon - but not to follow his prescriptions.

``I want to make clear that our readers should never use the medical opinions or treatments in `Rex Morgan, MD' as a substitute for a visit to a qualified medical professional,'' Wilson said.
