NEWS LITE : CIGARETTE CHARACTER INSPIRES TEEN-AGE VERSION.

Butt Man has a new protege: Nick O. Teen.

The Democrat-sponsored Butt Man, a 7-foot cigarette who tormented Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole during the 1996 campaign, showed up at a GOP fund-raiser Tuesday night along with his newest pal.

Nick O. Teen, representing a teen-age cigarette, accompanied his mentor to Tuesday's event, which raised nearly $11 million for Republican Senate and House candidates. Both Butt Man and Nick O. Teen, who were making their first appearances of the year, paraded outside the fund-raiser, denouncing the evils of smoking.

``I think the reason Nick O. Teen joined Butt Man Tuesday night was the 3,000 teen-agers that start smoking every day,'' said Democratic Party spokeswoman Melissa Ratcliff.

Ratcliff said both cigarettes are Democratic volunteers who want to call attention to the large contributions Republican members of Congress receive from tobacco companies. In 1996, Butt Man mocked Dole's claim that cigarettes are not necessarily addictive.

Billionaire finds price of guilt is high

Wal-Mart heiress Alice Walton, found guilty of drunk driving, was given her choice of a day in jail or a day of community service as her sentence by a Springdale, Ark., judge.

The multibillionaire, who crashed her Toyota 4-Runner near her home Jan. 27, had insisted on a trial and hired a team of high-powered lawyers rather than cop a conventional plea and pay a $650 fine. The 15-hour trial - featuring about 25 witnesses - ended in her conviction May 29. Now, her license has been suspended for 180 days, she must pay $925 in fines, and she must get counseling.

Walton, 48, daughter of the late Sam Walton, testified that she had had a few drinks the night of the crash - resulting in her broken nose - but said she wasn't drunk and didn't recall telling an officer: ``Do you know who I am?'' She also refused to take a blood-alcohol test. Forbes magazine reports Walton's worth at $6.3 billion.

Sinatra heirs say his will be done

It looks like Frank Sinatra's heirs have agreed to do it his way.

No one who was mentioned in Sinatra's will took advantage of the first opportunity to challenge it in court Thursday. A lawyer for the estate's executors credits a no-contest clause in the will with being a ``substantial deterrent'' to any challenges.

``Anyone knows if they want to challenge the will, they better succeed because if they fail, they are going to disinherit To cut off from an inheritance. To deprive someone, who would otherwise be an heir to property or another right, of his or her right to inherit.

A parent who wishes to disinherit a child may specifically state so in a will.

themselves completely,'' said lawyer Andrew Garb.

Sinatra died last month. He left his widow, Barbara, two homes, other property and up to $3.5 million. His children, who already had been given rights to much of Sinatra's lucrative music catalog, received $200,000 each plus undivided interests in a Beverly Hills office building.

His heirs have up to four months to challenge the will. Garb said the lack of any initial objection is a sign that a challenge is unlikely.

The actress joined about 100 bidders, sellers and spectators at an auction in Durango of 12 southwestern Colorado ranches Wednesday.

She said she came to Durango after learning so many ranches were for sale.

``My parents have property close to Ouray, where I spent time growing up,'' she said of the southwestern Colorado town. ``When I'm off, I'll come here.''

Hannah did not place any bids at the auction. She plans to negotiate a price privately, according to J.P. King Auction Co.

The ranches range in size from a 17-acre home site to 6,000 acres of grazing land.
