NEWS LITE : CAGNEY WORSHIP RAISED TRAVOLTA.

John Travolta reveals in a new biography his mother had one sure-fire way to get him to do chores: Pin any request on Jimmy Cagney.

``He was the only one outside my family who was a main source of inspiration,'' Travolta says in ``Travolta: The Life,'' written by Nigel Andrews.

Travolta says in the book that he would sit in front of the television set whenever an old Cagney musical came on and step along when Cagney did his tap dance routine, ``I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy Yankee Doodle Dandy

Travolta's mother seized on the fascination as a way to get her son to brush his teeth.

Boone backs ban on flag desecration Flag desecration is a blanket term applied to various acts that intentionally deface a flag, most often a national flag (though other flags can be defaced as well). Often, such action is intended to make a political point against a country or its policies.

Singer Pat Boone Charles Eugene Patrick "Pat" Boone (born June 1 1934) is a singer whose smooth style made him a popular performer of the 1950s. His cover versions of African-American rhythm and blues hits had a noticeable impact on the development of the broad popularity of rock and roll.  may have temporarily shed his squeaky-clean image by sporting leather duds and a dog collar last year, but he's still a flag-waving patriot.

Boone supports a proposed constitutional amendment to ban flag desecration that's headed for a Senate vote.

The singer said he will join senators in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday to unveil the results of the latest Gallup Poll Gallup Poll

``In the final analysis, this amendment is not about whether burning, defecating and urinating on our flag is free speech, it's about whether destroying our nation's flag is right and moral,'' Boone said in a statement Monday.

Boone surprised many fans when he released his 1997 album, ``In a Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy,'' a compilation of heavy metal music Noun 1. heavy metal music - loud and harsh sounding rock music with a strong beat; lyrics usually involve violent or fantastic imagery

Winds scuttle trans-Atlantic rowing bid

A Louisville, Ky., woman surrendered to Hurricane Danielle and gave up her bid Monday to become the first woman and first American to row across the Atlantic.

Tori Murden, 35, was rescued by a ship 950 miles west of her destination of Brest, France.

Her American Pearl, a 23-foot-long, 6-foot-wide vessel, capsized 11 times Sunday night, said Kevin Plagman of Sector Sport Watches, one of Murden's sponsors.

, she was knocked around in the cabin,'' he said. ``The cabin is very small, and in high seas, she kind of needs to hang on for her life. It's like being on the inside of a rattle or something.''

Murden, who suffered head and shoulder injuries, set off her emergency beacon early Monday and was rescued hours later by the Cyprus-registered Independent Spirit, Plagman said.

The rower left Nags Head, N.C., on June 14 and had expected to reach Brest - 3,635 miles away - later this month or early next month.

Only five men have crossed the Atlantic from west to east. Six died trying.
